ARCHAEOLOGICAL/CULTURAL MONITORING: ICO PROVIDED WINNEMEM WINTU TRIBAL CULTURAL MONITORS, CHANGING THE LONG PRACTICE OF USING OTHER AGENCIES OR DISTANT TRIBES TO HANDLE CONTRACTS WITH PUBLIC AGENCIES FOR PROJECTS IN THE WINNEMEM REGION OF STEWARDSHIP.


SALMON RESTORATION: CHIEF CALEEN SISK OF THE WINNEMEM WINTU TRIBE SIGNED AN HISTORIC CO-STEWARDSHIP AGREEMENT WITH CDFW AND NOAA IN MAY 2023 FOR SALMON RESTORATION ALONG THE MCCLOUD RIVER. AS THE FISCAL SPONSOR OF THIS AGREEMENT, ICO AND ITS EMPLOYEES WORKED COLLABORATIVELY WITH THESE ORGANIZATIONS TO BRING CHINOOK SALMON EGGS TO THE RIVER, MONITOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT, AND ASSIST IN TRAPPING, TRANSPORTING AND RELOCATING/RELEASING THE SALMON BELOW THE DAM. WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH VOLUNTEERS AND CONTRACTORS TOWARD THE RETURN OF THE DESCENDANTS OF OUR SALMON FROM NEW ZEALAND.


RUN4SALMON: A LARGER GROUP OF PARTICIPANTS (SINCE THE PANDEMIC) CYCLED, RAN, PADDLED, AND WALKED THE 300 MILE CHINOOK SALMON MIGRATION JOURNEY IN 2023. THIS YEARS MONTH-LONG PRAYER JOURNEY BEGAN AT THE BASE OF MT. SHASTA AND CULMINATED IN A WHALE CEREMONY AT MUIR BEACH, WITH POMO DANCERS AND A SALMON FEAST FOR PARTICIPANTS AND GUESTS. WE INCLUDED EDUCATION/ART ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE RUN FOR THE GROWING NUMBER OF YOUTH PARTICIPANTS.
