ICHUNI GLOBAL GRANT [KENYA] - SCHOOL/COMMUNITY CLEAN WATER PROJECTTHE PROJECT INVOLVES INSTALLATION OF A FRESH WATER SYSTEM TO THREE SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY IN ICHUNI, KENYA. IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE THE DRILLING OF A BOREHOLE WELL, INSTALLATION OF A SOLAR-POWERED PUMP, BUILDING OF AN ELEVATED STORAGE TANK/FILTRATION SYSTEM, AND BUILDING OF DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM AND WATER KIOSKS TO SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY. FUNDS HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED TO PROVIDE COST OF COMMUNITY EDUCATION, WATER USE AND HYGIENE TRAINING IN THE SCHOOLS.THE PROJECT HAS BEEN FUNDED JOINTLY BY LOCAL CALIFORNIA ROTARY CLUBS AND A GLOBAL GRANT FROM THE ROTARY FOUNDATION. THE KENYA PARTNER-CLUB IS THE ROTARY CLUB OF KAKAMEGA, NAIROBI,KENYA. ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS PROVIDES THE ON-SITE MANAGEMENT/ SUPERVISION OF THE PROJECT WITH THE ROTARY CLUB OF KATAMEGA. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION PROVIDES OVERSIGHT FOR GRANT ADMINISTRATION.PROJECT IS ESTIMATED TO BE COMPLETE AND OPERATIONAL IN 2022.
COVID-19 RELIEF - FOOD INSECURITY/PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION IN RESPONSE TO THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND FOOD SUPPLY CRISIS CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC, THE CLUB MADE GRANTS TO LOCAL FOOD-RELATED CHARITIES AND PRODUCED PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION MATERIALS.GRANTS WERE MADE TO THE LOCAL COUNTY FOOD BANK AND MEALS-ON-WHEELS($11,390). IN SUPPORT OF OTHER ORGANZIATIONS' COVID-19 RELIEF EFFORTS, GRANTS WERE MADE TO THE CLUB FOUNDATION AND THE ROTARY CLUB OF MORAGA ($9,000). THE CLUB PRODUCED EDUCATIONAL FLYERS AND WRIST BANDS FOR THE LOCAL COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S COVID-19 PUBLIC EDUCATION/INFORMATION PROGRAM TO LOCAL SCHOOLS AND SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES.
GIRLS PERSONAL HYGIENE ("PADS") PROJECT (NAKURU, KENYA)CONTINUATION OF A PROJECT AT INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS IN EASTERN KENYA,, TO EDUCATE YOUNG GIRLS ON PERSONAL HYGIENE MATTERS AND PROVIDE THEM WITH A RELIABLE AND SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY OF PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS. THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY PERSONAL-CARE HABITS AND ENABLE THE GIRLS TO ATTEND SCHOOL FULL-TIME. TO DATE, APPROXIMATELY 1,000 GIRLS HAVE BENEFITED FROM THIS PROGRAM AND AS THE PROGRAM HAS GROWN, LOCAL WOMENS' COOPERATIVES HAVE STARTED TO PRODUCE THESE PRODUCTS LOCALLY, MORE SCHOOLS ARE PARTICIPATING, AS WELL AS, MORE ROTARY AND OTHER ROTARIANS ARE ENGAGING IN THE PROGRAM.THE KENYA PARTNER-CLUB IS THE ROTARY CLUB OF NAKURU, NAIROBI,KENYA, SERVING AS THE LOCAL CONTACT .
