GRANTS - THE MISSISSIPPI HUMANITIES COUNCIL OFFERS REGULAR GRANTS (UP TO $7,500) AND MINIGRANTS (UP TO $2,000) TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AROUND THE STATE IN SUPPORT OF PUBLIC HUMANITIES PROGRAMS. IN 2020 AND 2021, MHC ALSO DISTRIBUTED EMERGENCY COVID RELIEF GRANTS, THROUGH CARES AND ARP, TO CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS IN MISSISSIPPI TO HELP THEM RESPOND TO THE CHALLENGES BROUGHT ON BY THE PANDEMIC.
PRISON EDUCATION INITIATIVE - THE MHC SUPPORTS HUMANITIES BASED PRISON EDUCATION PROGRAMS, WORKING WITH THREE COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN THREE DIFFERENT PRISON FACILITIES. WE FUND FOR CREDIT COURSES AT THE MISSISSIPPI STATE PENITENTIARY AT PARCHMAN, CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, AND VARIOUS COUNTY FACILITIES. WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EXPAND THIS PROGRAM IN RECENT YEARS THANKS TO A MAJOR GRANT FROM THE MELLON FOUNDATION.
SMITHSONIAN TRAVELING EXHIBITS - THE MHC HAS SPONSORED SEVERAL SMITHSONIAN TRAVELING EXHIBITS, BRINGING THEM TO LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS IN SMALL COMMUNITIES AROUND THE STATE. THE MHC PAYS A USER FEE FOR LOCAL HOST SITES AND SUPPORTS PROGRAMS RELATED TO THE TOPIC AT EACH SITE. THE COUNCIL ALSO PROVIDES A STATEWIDE SCHOLAR TO HELP FORMULATE AND DIRECT PROGRAMMING RELATED TO THE TOPICS.
