THE MISSISSIPPI HUMANITIES COUNCIL (MHC) OFFERS REGULAR GRANTS (UP TO $10,000) AND MINIGRANTS (UP TO $2500) TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT A WIDE RANGE OF PUBLIC HUMANITIES PROGRAMS. IN 2023, WE LAUNCHED A NEW GRANT PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMS RELATED TO MISSISSIPPI HISTORY AND CULTURE.


PRISON EDUCATION INITIATIVE - THE MHC SUPPORTS HUMANITIES-BASED PRISON EDUCATION PROGRAMS, INCLUDING BOOK DISCUSSION PROGRAMS AT SEVERAL PRISON FACILITIES AND FOR-CREDIT COURSES OFFERED BY SIX DIFFERENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AT EIGHT DIFFERENT PRISON FACILITIES. WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EXPAND THIS PROGRAM SIGNIFICANTLY IN RECENT YEARS DUE TO MAJOR GRANTS FROM THE MELLON FOUNDATION.


SMITHSONIAN TRAVELING EXHIBITS - THE MHC HAS SPONSORED SEVERAL SMITHSONIAN TRAVELING EXHIBITS, BRINGING THEM TO LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS IN SMALL COMMUNITIES AROUND THE STATE. THE MHC PAYS A USER FEE FOR LOCAL HOST SITES AND SUPPORTS PROGRAMS RELATED TO THE TOPIC AT EACH SITE. THE COUNCIL ALSO PROVIDES A STATEWIDE SCHOLAR TO HELP FORMULATE AND DIRECT PROGRAMMING RELATED TO THE TOPICS.
