MOS&B SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS AWARDED ANNUALLY TO GENEALOGICALLY PROVEN DESCENDANTS OF CONFEDERATE OFFICERS OR MEMBERS OF THE CONFEDERAL GOVERNMENT. PRIORITY IS GIVEN TO STUDENTS MATRICULATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE. APPLICATIONS ARE SUBMITTED BY MARCH 1ST OF EACH YEAR TO THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE. UP TO SIX SCHOLARSHIPS OF $1,000 EACH ARE AWARDED ANNUALLY PROVIDED THERE ARE ENOUGH QUALIFIED CANDIDATES IN THE POOL. APPLICANTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN AN ACCREDITED DEGREE-GRANTING TWO OR FOUR YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY INSTITUTION BEFORE FUNDS ARE DISBURSED. SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS ARE PLACED ON DEPOSIT AT THE INSTITUTION WHERE THE PERSON IS ENROLLED FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE AWARDEE. AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS ARE FOR ONE YEAR ONLY. THE DOUGLAS SOUTHALL FREEMAN HISTORY AWARD FOR THE BEST PUBLISHED BOOK OF HIGH MERIT IN THE FIELD OF SOUTHERN HISTORY BEGINNING WITH THE COLONIAL PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME; THE RANDALL BRACIN JONES HISTORY TEACHER OF THE YEAR IS GIVEN TO AN OUTSTANDING HISTORY TEACHER WHO HAS BEEN NOMINATED BY A MEMBER; THE JONES ESTEN COOKE FICTION AWARD FOR THE BEST PUBISHED BOOK OF FICTION THAT PORTRAYS CHARACTERS AND EVENTS DEALING WITH THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES, CONFEDERATE HERITAGE OR SOUTHERN HISTORY IN A HISTORICALLY ACCURATE FASHION, AND THE GENERAL BASIL W. DUKE AWARD FOR THE BEST RE-ISSURANCE OF OUT OF PRINT BOOKS THAT ACCURATELY PRESENT THE HISTORY OF THE WAR FOR SOUTERN INDEPENDENCE. EACH AWARD RECEIPIENT RECEIVES A CHECK AND AN APPROPRIATE TROPHY. THE FREEMAN AND COOKE AWARDS ARE PRESENTED TO THE AUTHOR. THE JONES AWARD IS PRESENTED TO THE TEACHER. THE FREEMAN AWARD HAS BEEN GIVEN SINCE 1989, THE JONES AWARD BEGINNING IN 2014, THE COOKE AWARD SINCE 1989, AND THE DUKE AWARD SINCE 1997.
