TO CREATE A VILLAGE WHERE INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES CAN LIVE, LEARN, WORK, WORSHIP, AND ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. DAY PROGRAMS ARE CURRENTLY OFFERED IN PREPARATION FOR A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY.

REACH HIGH AND DREAM BIG EDUCATIONAL AND PRE-VOCATIONAL DAY PROGRAMS ARE FOR STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AGES 18 AND ABOVE WHO ARE NO LONGER IN SCHOOL. THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE TWO PROGRAMS IS THE LEVEL OF NEED OF PARTICIPANTS. DREAM BIG VILLAGERS REQUIRE MORE INDIVIDUALIZED ATTENTION AND A LOWER STUDENT/TEACHER RATIO WHILE REACH HIGH VILLAGERS OPERATE MORE INDEPENDENTLY. BOTH ARE YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS CONDUCTED MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. THESE PROGRAMS REINFORCE SKILLS LEARNED IN SCHOOL (SUCH AS READING AND MATH) WHILE INCORPORATING SOCIAL SKILLS, ART, PHYSICAL FITNESS, AND PRE-VOCATIONAL TRAINING. STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN REGULAR FIELD TRIPS WHICH ALLOW THEM TO HAVE COMMUNITY-BASED INSTRUCTION TO GENERALIZE THE SKILLS THEY HAVE LEARNED. THE ENVIRONMENT AT HIGH POINT VILLAGE STRESSES TEAMWORK AND POSITIVE INTERACTIONS WITH PEERS, TEACHERS, VOLUNTEERS, AND GUESTS.
MUSIC THERAPY AND SPEECH THERAPY SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE WITH BOARD- CERTIFIED AND LICENSECED THERAPISTS ON STAFF AT HIGH POINT VILLAGE. MUSIC THERAPY IS THE CLINICAL AND EVIDENCE-BASED USE OF INTERVENTIONS TO ACCOMPLISH INDIVIDUALIZED GOALS WITHIN THE FOLLOWING DOMAINS: PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, COMMUNICATION, COGNITIVE, AND EMOTIONAL. SPEECH-LANGUGE PATHOLOGISTS PARTNER WITH VILLAGERS TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL BY INCREASING THEIR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS, SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS, FUTHER COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS, AND IMPROVE THEIR ABILITY TO ORGANIZE THEIR THOUGHTS, PAY ATTENTION, REMEMBER, AND SOLVE PROBLEMS. HIGH POINT VILLAGE OFFERS INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP SESSIONS AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING THE DAY AND EVENING FOR THE CONVENIENCE OF THOSE WHO ARE ALREADY AT HIGH POINT PARTICIPATING IN OTHER PROGRAMS AS WELL AS FOR THOSE WHO COME TO HIGH POINT ONLY FOR THERAPIES. THERE ARE MANY INDIVIDUAL SUCCESSES REPORTED BY PARTICIPANTS AND FAMILIES AS WELL AS THE THERAPISTS.
THERE WERE FOUR SUMMER CAMPS DURING 2021, FOUR DAY CAMPS AND ONE OVERNIGHT CAMP. CAMP ABILITIES DAY CAMP HOSTED CAMPERS AGES 8 AND ABOVE AND INCLUDED MUSIC AND MOVEMENT, CRAFTS, GAMES, AND SPECIAL GUESTS FROM THE COMMUNITY. ART CAMP AND COOKING CAMP WERE ONE WEEK EACH AND WERE FILLED TO CAPACITY AND VERY POPULAR WITH CAMPERS WANTING TO DEVELOP CREATIVE SKILLS. SPORTS CAMP WAS A NEW ADDITION IN 2021 AND NOT ONLY STRESSED SKILLS AND COORDINATION, BUT TEAMWORK AND POSITIVE PEER INTERACTIONS AS WELL. CAMP HIGH POINT WAS THE OVERNIGHT CAMP FOR AGES 18 AND ABOVE WHICH TOOK PLACE AT A POPULAR NEARBY CAMP AND RETREAT CENTER. OVER A WEEKEND, 25 CAMPERS AGES 18 AND OVER ALONG WITH 9 TRAINED STAFF PARTICIPATED IN TRADITIONAL CAMP ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SWIMMING, BOATING, HIKING, ARCHERY, AND A ROPES ADVENTURE COURSE. THIS CAMP IS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED EACH YEAR BY VILLAGERS AS WELL AS FAMILIES.
ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDE AFTERNOON ENRICHMENT CLASSES WHICH ARE DESIGNED FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AGES EIGHT AND ABOVE. THERE ARE SPRING AND FALL SEMESTERS. RECREATIONAL CLASSSES STRESS TEAMWORK WHILE IMPROVING COORDINATION AND HEALTH. ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT IS PROVIDED THROUGH READING AND COMMUNITY BASED MATH; WHILE CLASSES SUCH AS COOKING AND SELF-ESTEEM BUILD LIFE SKILLS. FINE ARTS CLASSES ENHANCE THE INDIVIDUAL AS A WHOLE AND PROVIDE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES. THE UNDERLYING PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE A SUPPORTIVE PEER GROUP AND FUN AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITES.
