FOUNDED IN 1924, MOCA IS THE FIRST ORGANIZATION IN JACKSONVILLE DEVOTED TO THE VISUAL ARTS. IN 2003, MOCA OPENED THE 60,000 SQUARE-FOOT MUSEUM, THEATER AND EDUCATION SPACE IT NOW OCCUPIES IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE'S URBAN CORE. IN 2009, MOCA ENHANCED ITS COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING THE GREATER JACKSONVILLE AREA WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION WHEN IT BECAME A CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA PROVIDING SPECIAL LECTURES, COLLEGE LEVEL ART COURSES, DIRECT MUSEUM EXPERIENCE FOR ART STUDENTS AND SPECIAL FACULTY AND STUDENT EXHIBITIONS. MOCA CONTINUES TO BE A CORNERSTONE OF JACKSONVILLE'S DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION PLAN AND A SIGNIFICANT DRAW FOR TOURISTS AND VISITORS. A ROBUST ANNUAL CALENDAR OF EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMMING BRINGS NEW VISITORS TO THE CIVIC CORE YEAR-ROUND.
MOCA'S PERMANENT COLLECTION OF NEARLY 1,000 WORKS OF ART FROM 1960 TO THE PRESENT INCLUDES PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, PRINTMAKING, SCULPTURE, WORKS ON PAPER, TEXTILES AND NEW MEDIA. WITH OVER 500 ARTISTS REPRESENTED IN THE COLLECTION, MOCA JACKSONVILLE ENDEAVORS TO CREATE A PERMANENT COLLECTION OF SIGNIFICANT DEPTH, SCOPE AND QUALITY TO USE FOR STUDY, SCHOLARLY RESEARCH, ARTISTIC INSPIRATION AND EXHIBITIONAL TOOLS THAT FOSTER AND EDUCATION, AWARENESS AND EXPERIENCE WITH CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ART THAT CONNECTS WITH ALL AGES AND DEMOGRAPHICS. THE BREADTH AND DEPTH OF THE PERMANENT COLLECTION GARNERS RESPECT IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE AND PROVIDES MOCA THE ABILITY TO ENRICH VISITOR'S EXPERIENCE THROUGH HIGH PROFILE LOANS TO ENHANCE EXHIBITIONS. IN 2016, MOCA ADOPTED A NEW THEMATIC COLLECTING STRATEGY TO CHART THE PERMANENT COLLECTION'S ONGOING GROWTH AND INTERPRETATION. STANDARDS-BASED SCHOOL TOURS, BOTH IN-PERSON AND VIRTUALLY, ARE TAILORED TO EACH GRADE LEVEL AND FORM A MAJOR PORTION OF MOCA'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. MOCA OFFERS TOURS AND SPECIFICALLY CRAFTED CURRICULUM (ALIGNED WITH EXHIBITIONS AND DESIGNED WITH FLORIDA STATE STANDARDS IN MIND) FOR PRE-K THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL AS PROVIDING ROBUST PROGRAMMING FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND ADULTS. LED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSEUM EDUCATORS, MOCA'S MULTI-FACETED TOUR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND FOSTERS AN APPRECIATION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART. MOCA CONTINUES A COMMITMENT TO BRINGING CRITICAL ARTS EDUCATION TO TITLE I STUDENTS THROUGHOUT DUVAL COUNTY. EDUCATION PROGRAMMING FOR K-12 INCLUDES:VOICE OF THE PEOPLE-AN INNOVATIVE LITERACY-BASED EDUCATIONAL ARTS INITIATIVE THAT HONES CRITICAL THINKING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: DEVELOPS A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF CONTEMPORARY ART. FOURTH GRADERS WRITE AND RECORD AUDIO GUIDES FOR SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION. PRE AND POST-TESTING, USING THE STATE'S READING AND LITERACY RUBRIC, SHOW AND AVERAGE IMPROVEMENT OF 46%. VOTP IS NOW AVAILABLE VIRTUALLY, FREE OF CHARGE, TO ALL DUVAL COUNTY STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12. AUTISM CREATES IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EDUCATION INITIATIVE DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS (ASD) AND OTHER EXCEPTIONALITIES. WHILE CHILDREN WITH ASD STRUGGLE WITH VERBAL COMMUNICATION, SOCIAL RELATIONS AND SENSORY DEVELOPMENT, CREATIVE ARTMAKING ACTIVITIES ENABLE THEM TO FOSTER NEW MEANS OF SELF-EXPRESSION AND COMMUNICATION.STEAM TOURS, THROUGH MEET ME AT MOCA, PROVIDES TITLE I STUDENTS IN DUVAL COUNTY WITH A LIVE VIRTUAL GUIDED TOUR OF MOCA'S GALLERIES LED BY MOCA EDUCATORS; A SPECIALLY CREATED PRE- AND POST-TOUR CURRICULUM; AND A FREE ART KIT TO FUEL YOUNG CREATIVE ENERGY. WITH 3 LEVELS OF RICH CONTENT AND SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED CURRICULUM FOR STUDENTS IN K-5, 6-8 AND 9-12, THE PROGRAM OFFERS 6 HOURS OF CRITICAL ART EDUCATION, VIRTUAL MUSEUM EXPERIENCE AND PRACTICE WITH COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION. DURING THIS GRANTING PERIOD, MORE THAN 2000 RECEIVED THIS POWERFUL ARTS EDUCATION.
