GENERAL MUSEUM FOUNDED IN 1924, MOCA IS THE FIRST ORGANIZATION IN JACKSONVILLE DEDICATED TO THE VISUAL ARTS. IN 2003, MOCA OPENED THE 60,000 SQUARE-FOOT MUSEUM, THEATER, AND EDUCATION SPACE IT NOW OCCUPIES IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE'S URBAN CORE. IN 2009, MOCA ENHANCED ITS COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING THE GREATER JACKSONVILLE AREA WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION WHEN IT BECAME A CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA, PROVIDING SPECIAL LECTURES, COLLEGE LEVEL ART COURSES, DIRECT MUSEUM EXPERIENCE FOR ART STUDENTS, AND SPECIAL FACULTY AND STUDENT EXHIBITIONS. MOCA CONTINUES TO BE A CORNERSTONE OF JACKSONVILLE'S DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION PLAN AND A SIGNIFICANT DRAW FOR TOURISTS AND VISITORS. A ROBUST ANNUAL CALENDAR OF EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMMING BRINGS NEW VISITORS TO THE CIVIC CORE YEAR-ROUND. IN ADDITION, MOCA IS COMMITTED TO OFFERING COMPELLING OPPORTUNITIES TO ALL AUDIENCES THROUGH ROBUST, REGULAR PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH, INCLUDING: EXHIBITION OPENINGS, VYSTAR FREE SATURDAYS, GUIDED TOURS, SPRING AND FALL FAMILY DAYS, STUDIO PRACTICE ART WORKSHOPS, MOCA MOVIE NIGHTS, A VARIETY OF LECTURE SERIES, FIRST WEDNESDAY ART WALK, BLUE STAR MILITARY FREE ACCESS, AND TEEN ART COUNCIL.
PERMANENT COLLECTIONTHE MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION CONSISTS OF APPROXIMATELY 1,500 WORKS OF ART, INCLUDING PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, PRINTMAKING, SCULPTURE, WORKS ON PAPER, EPHEMERA, AND NEW MEDIA. WITH MORE THAN 500 ARTISTS REPRESENTED IN THE COLLECTION, MOCA JACKSONVILLE ENDEAVORS TO CREATE A PERMANENT COLLECTION OF SIGNIFICANT DEPTH, SCOPE, AND QUALITY TO BE USED FOR STUDY, SCHOLARLY RESEARCH, AND EXHIBITIONALL TOOLS THAT FOSTER AN EDUCATION, AWARENESS, AND EXPERIENCE WITH CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ART. THE BREADTH AND DEPTH OF THE PERMANENT COLLECTION GARNERS RESPECT IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE AND PROVIDES MOCA THE ABILITY TO ENRICH VISITOR'S EXPERIENCE THROUGH HIGH PROFILE LOANS THAT ENHANCE EXHIBITIONS. THE MUSEUM'S MISSION FOCUSES OF ART, ARTISTS, AND IDEAS ARE INTERWOVEN INTO THE WAY MOCA COLLABORATES WITH ARTISTS LOCALLY, NATIONALLY, AND GLOBALLY, INSPIRING DISCOURSE AND DIALOGUE WITHIN CONTEMPORARY ART AND CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMSMOCA HOLDS A UNIQUE PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY AS AN EDUCATOR THROUGH CONTEMPORARY ART. MOCA OFFERS CURRICULUM ENHANCING STANDARDS-BASED SCHOOL TOURS FOR K-12 STUDENTS, BOTH VIRTUALLY AND IN-PERSON, AS WELL AS A ROBUST CALENDAR OF PROGRAMMING FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND LIFELONG LEARNERS. LED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSEUM EDUCATORS, MOCA'S MULTI-FACETED TOUR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND FOSTERS AN APPRECIATION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART. MOCA CONTINUES A COMMITMENT TO BRINGING CRITICAL ARTS EDUCATION TO TITLE I STUDENTS THROUGHOUT DUVAL COUNTY.
