TACOMA/PIERCE COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PARTNERS WITH FAMILIES IN NEED TO BUILD, OWN AND MAINTAIN DECENT, AFFORDABLE HOMES IN SAFE COMMUNITIES.FOUNDED IN 1985, TACOMA/PIERCE COUNTY HABITAT HAS BUILT, REHABILITATED OR REPAIRED OVER 318 HOMES SERVING OVER 1965 ADULTS AND 949 CHILDREN. HABITAT HOMEOWNERS ACHIEVE THE STRENGTH, STABILITY AND SELF-RELIANCE THEY NEED TO BUILD A BETTER LIFE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES. FROM ITS CONCEPTION, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HAS BEEN BUILT ON PARTNERSHIPS - PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILIES, CHURCHES, AREA CORPORATIONS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND INDIVIDUALS. WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF FAMILIES WORKING SIDE BY SIDE WITH VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD HABITAT HOMES. EVERY YEAR, NEARLY 900 VOLUNTEERS HELP US BUILD HOMES, WORK IN THE OFFICE, AND WORK IN THE ORGANIZATION'S RETAIL STORES. VOLUNTEERS HELP KEEP THE COST OF CONSTRUCTION LOW, MAKING HABITAT ONE OF THE MOST AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS IN THE WORLD. AS ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES, HABITAT HOUSEHOLDS GET A HAND UP, NOT A HANDOUT. TACOMA HABITAT CREATES AND MAINTAINS AFFORDABLE HOUSING THROUGH: HOMEOWNERSHIP: TACOMA HABITAT PROVIDES AFFORDABLE HOMEOWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR PIERCE COUNTY FAMILIES EARNING BETWEEN 30-80% OF THE AREA MEDIAN INCOME. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HAS THREE MAIN ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROGRAM: NEED, WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER, AND ABILITY TO PAY. HOMEOWNERS PAY AN AFFORDABLE MONTHLY MORTGAGE THAT DOES NOT EXCEED 30% OF THEIR INCOME AND COMMITS A MINIMUM OF 200 HOURS OF SWEAT EQUITY TO BUILDING THEIR HOME AND THOSE OF THEIR HABITAT NEIGHBORS. TACOMA HABITAT BUILDS AND SELLS ABOUT 8-12 NEW HOMES EVERY YEAR. IN FISCAL YEAR 2022, TACOMA HABITAT SOLD THREE HOMES. THE ORGANIZATION IS CURRENTLY FINISHING A 4-HOME DEVELOPMENT IN FERNHILL AND A 11-HOME DEVELOPMENT IN TACOMA. ALL HABITAT HOMES FEATURE ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES AND WATER CONSERVING LOW FLOW PLUMBING FIXTURES. THE HOMES FEATURE INSULATION THAT EXCEED BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS AS WELL AS HIGH PERFORMANCE WINDOWS TO ENSURE THEY ARE ECONOMICAL TO HEAT. HOUSING COUNSELING: TACOMA HABITAT BECAME A HUD-CERTIFIED HOUSING COUNSELING AGENCY IN 2020. HOUSING COUNSELORS WORK CLOSELY WITH FAMILIES IN NEED AS THEY NAVIGATE HOMEOWNERSHIP OPTIONS. HOMEOWNERSHIP COUNSELING INCLUDES: PRE-PURCHASE COUNSELING, HOMEBUYER EDUCATION AND NON-DELINQUENT POST PURCHASE. CRITICAL HOME REPAIR: TACOMA HABITAT PROVIDES HOME REPAIR AND MODIFICATIONS TO HOMEOWNER SENIORS, VETERANS AND PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES TO HELP MAINTAIN A SAFE AND LIVABLE HOME TO AGE IN PLACE GRACEFULLY AND INDEPENDENTLY.GLOBAL HOUSING: HABITAT MAY WORK IN TACOMA/PIERCE COUNTY, BUT THERE IS ALSO WORK AROUND THE WORLD. IN A TYPICAL YEAR, TACOMA HABITAT OFFERS GLOBAL VILLAGE TRIPS FOR VOLUNTEERS. DURING A TRIP, VOLUNTEERS EXPERIENCE THE HOST COUNTRY'S CULTURE, LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL PRACTICES WHILE WORKING ALONGSIDE HOMEOWNERS AND VOLUNTEERS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, RACES AND RELIGIONS. IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, TACOMA HABITAT ORGANIZED TRIPS TO GUATEMALA, VIETNAM, COLOMBIA AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. TACOMA HABITAT IS FUNDED THROUGH GRANTS, DONATIONS, PROCEEDS FROM HOME SALES, HOMEOWNER MORTGAGE PAYMENTS, AND PROCEEDS FROM OUR RETAIL STORES. TACOMA HABITAT HAS THREE RETAIL STORES LOCATED IN TACOMA, PUYALLUP, AND LAKEWOOD. THE STORES OFFER GENTLY USED FURNITURE, APPLIANCES, AND BUILDING SUPPLIES AT GREATLY REDUCED PRICES. PROFIT FROM THE STORES HELPS BUILD MORE AFFORDABLE HOMES IN PIERCE COUNTY. MORE THAN A ROOF, TACOMA HABITAT BELIEVES HOME IS JUST THE BEGINNING - A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR VIBRANT COMMUNITIES, A STABLE FINANCIAL FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS, AND A HEALTHY PLACE FOR A FAMILY AND CHILDREN TO GROW.
