HANDS ON CONSERVATION - WILD SOUTH ENGAGES COMMUNITIES IN PRACTICAL PROJECTS THAT PRODUCE REAL CONSERVATION RESULTS, COMBINING ENJOYMENT OF THE OUTDOORS WITH ON-THE- GROUND ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT MEET SPECIFIC FOREST NEEDS DRIVING PUBLIC LANDS POLICY. THIS YEAR'S FOCUS WAS IN THE HARPER CREEK, LINVILLE GORGE, LOST COVE, AND UNAKA MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS AND WILDERNESS STUDY AREAS, AS WELL AS THE LINVILLE, NOLICHUCKY, AND WILSON CREEK WILD & SCENIC AND PROPOSED WILD & SCENIC RIVERS. PROJECTS INCLUDED TRASH CLEANUP, GRAFFITI REMOVAL,TRAIL MAINTENANCE, CAMPSITE MAINTENANCE, FOREST ROAD CULVERT REPAIR, AND NEW TRAIL CONSTRUCTION.
HANDS ON SCIENCE - WILD SOUTH INVOLVES THE PUBLIC IN SCIENCE-BASED SOLUTIONS TO THE SHARED CHALLENGES OF PUBLIC LANDS, TARGETING OPPORTUNITIES WHERE PEOPLE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WILDEST OF OUR FORESTS AND WATERS. THIS YEAR'S COMMUNITY-POWERED PROJECTS INCLUDED: MITIGATING TRAIL EROSION TO REDUCE SEDIMENTATION INTO TROUT WATERS, MAPPING DISPERSED CAMPSITES, REMOVAL OF NON-NATIVE INVASIVE PLANTS, CONSTRUCTION OF STONE BARRIERS TO PROTECT TRAILSIDE ENDANGERED PLANTS, MONITORING WILDERNESS WILDLIFE USING GAME CAMERAS, AND MAPPING RECREATION USE IN SENSITIVE CLIFFSIDE AND CLIFFTOP HABITATS.
HANDS ON ADVOCACY - WILD SOUTH LEADS BY EXAMPLE, DEFENDING WILD LANDS IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH THE WIDE RANGE OF FOREST STAKEHOLDERS, ENGAGING COMMUNITIES IN PUBLIC LANDS DECISION-MAKING FOR THE ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY OF WILDERNESS AND WILD & SCENIC RIVERS.
