IN THE 2020-2021 FISCAL YEAR, THE MEDIATION CENTER ADAPTED TO CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES BY TAKING MEASURES TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. MORE THAN 320 INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATED IN COMMUNITY MEDIATION SERVICES TO SEEK PEACEFUL RESOLUTION TO DIFFICULT AND STRESSFUL CONFLICTS. MEDIATION DECREASES FUTURE COURT AND LAW ENFORCEMENT INVOLVEMENT FOR PARTICIPANTS AND IMPROVES INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBERS, NEIGHBORS, CO-WORKERS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE INCLUDING MEDIATORS, ATTORNEYS, MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, PROFESSIONALS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS ATTENDED A TRAINING LAST YEAR. 14 OF THOSE COMPLETED TRAINING TO BECOME VOLUNTEER MEDIATORS.
39 FAMILIES INCLUDING 61 CHILDREN WERE KEPT SAFE BY THE FAMILY VISITATION PROGRAM'S SUPERVISED VISITATION AND SAFE CHILD EXCHANGE SERVICES. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED MORE THAN 550 VISITS AND EXCHANGES; ALL WERE FREE FROM ABUSE AND VIOLENCE. THESE SERVICES PREVENT ONGOING VIOLENCE, ABUSE, AND TRAUMA TO CHILD AND ADULT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE. MORE THAN 115 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN MEDIATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS-BUILDING, WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON YOUTH IN NEED OF SUPPORT TO RE- ENGAGE IN SCHOOL IN THE WAKE OF THE PANDEMIC. FINALLY, THREE YOUTH AGES 16 TO 18 WERE TRAINED AND HIRED AS PEER MEDIATORS TO BETTER REACH YOUTH IN HENDERSON COUNTY.
