Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
ROCKTOWN HISTORY DEBUTED "KNOCKING DOWN WALLS," A DOCUMENTARY WHICH PRESENTS A POWERFUL STORY OF HISTORY AND CIVICS - A STORY ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AS TOLD BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. FROM HARRISONBURG'S FEDERAL COURT HOUSE, JUDGE JOHN PAUL HANDED DOWN DECISIONS THAT ULTIMATELY FORCED THE END OF VIRGINIA'S "MASSIVE RESISTANCE" TO SCHOOL INTEGRATION. THE DOCUMENTARY INTRODUCES THE STUDENTS WHO LIVED THAT HISTORY. THE FILM WAS CREATED BY FIVE SPOTSWOOD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AS A PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ROCKINGHAM COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND IS AVAILABLE ON THE ROCKTOWN HISTORY YOUTUBE CHANNEL.
ROCKTOWN HISTORY INTRODUCED A POPULAR SERIES OF INFORMAL EVENTS CALLED COFFEE MILLS TO THE REGULAR PROGRAM CALENDAR. TWICE MONTHLY, COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO A MORNING GATHERING IN THE GALLERIES FOR CONVERSATIONS AROUND A VARIETY OF TOPICS: DEEP DIVES INTO THE ROCKTOWN HISTORY COLLECTIONS WITH THE CURATOR; RESEARCH AND BOOK TALKS WITH LOCAL AUTHORS AND HISTORIANS; AND CASUAL PRESENTATIONS BY INDIVIDUALS CONNECTED TO LOCAL HISTORY STORIES. THE COFFEE MILLS CREATE INDIRECT REVENUE THROUGH RETAIL SALES, DONATIONS, RETURN VISITS, AND NEW MEMBERSHIPS.
ROCKTOWN HISTORY TARGETED COLLECTIONS CARE AND PRESERVATION THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. AFTER HIRING A PART-TIME CURATOR IN THE SPRING, TRUSTEES, STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS CAME TOGETHER TO RESTRUCTURE THE COLLECTIONS COMMITTEE AND TO ESTABLISH A NEW COLLECTIONS POLICY & PROCEDURES DOCUMENT. THE NEW P&P DOCUMENT PROVIDES GUIDANCE FOR DECISIONS REGARDING ACCESSIONING AND DEACCESSIONING TO CREATE A MORE REPRESENTATIVE AND EDUCATIONAL COLLECTION OF ARTIFACTS AND ARCHIVES. A SUBSTANTIAL INVESTMENT TO REPLACE AGING ROOF INFRASTRUCTURE ENSURED THE PROTECTION OF THE COLLECTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN THE MUSEUM BUILDING WELL INTO THE FUTURE.
