Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

SO THAT OUR COMMUNITIES FIND INSPIRATION AND CONNECTION IN THE RICH HISTORIES OF HARRISONBURG AND ROCKINGHAM, WE KEEP AND TELL THE STORIES OF THE AREA AND ITS PEOPLE AND THEIR INFLUENCES ON OUR LIVES AND SHARED FUTURE. WE FULFILL OUR MISSION BY: PRESERVING, SHARING, INNOVATING, PARTNERING.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

IN LIEU OF IN-PERSON GATHERINGS, ROCKTOWN HISTORY INITIATED A THIRD THURSDAY TALK WEBINAR SERIES. THE FORMAT PROVIDED A FULL-LENGTH PRESENTATION BY A FEATURED SPEAKER, FOLLOWED BY CONVERSATION WITH A GUEST HOST WHO WAS ALSO AN EXPERT IN THE FIELD. THE VIRTUAL AUDIENCE PARTICIPATED THROUGH Q&A. TOPICS INCLUDED "ALEXANDER ARCHER AND THE EMANCIPATION MONUMENT," "SHENANDOAH VALLEY ARCHITECTURE, AND UNIONISTS IN MARTINSBURG AND BERKELEY COUNTY, VA." THESE RESOURCES EXPANDED ACCESSIBILITY TO PARTICIPANTS DURING THE EVENT, AS WELL AS LATER THROUGH THE NEW ROCKTOWN HISTORY YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

ROCKTOWN HISTORY RECEIVED FUNDING THROUGH A VIRGINIA HUMANITIES GRANT AND A PRIVATE DONOR TO REDESIGN THE MUSEUM'S LARGE MEETING ROOM TO ALSO SERVE AS A WELCOMING SPACE WITH A MAP-BASED EXHIBITION INSTALLATION AROUND ITS PERIMETER WALLS. THE NEW EXHIBITION WILL EXPLORE THE HISTORICAL AND HUMAN GEOGRAPHY OF OUR COMMUNITY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY, VIRGINIA, THE NATION, AND THE WORLD. IN THE COURSE OF DOING THIS, WE AIM TO ATTRACT STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES FROM ACROSS THE RICH CULTURAL DIVERSITY OF THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY. A KEY COMPONENT OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCORPORATE CONTENT AND CREATE CURRICULAR MATERIALS THAT WILL SUPPORT SOL-BASED FIELD TRIPS AND CLASSROOM SUPPLEMENTS.

AS COVID CONCERNS DIMINISHED, ROCKTOWN HISTORY SPONSORED, PARTNERED ON, AND CREATED OFFSITE EVENTS TO INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY AND AWARENESS OF SEVERAL LOCAL HISTORY STORIES. (1) THE DOCUMENTARY "LIBBY" QUESTIONED WHAT MADE LIBBY WAMPLER CUSTER (1913-2019) A LIVING LEGACY IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY. (2) IN CHARACTER, AUTHOR LIBBY LAYNE INTRODUCED READERS TO THE SUBJECT OF HER FICTIONAL BIOGRAPHY, HER GRANDMOTHER SADIE ZIGLER WAMPLER (1882-1922), THROUGH HISTORIC INTERPRETATION OF SADIE'S LIFE AND IN CONVERSATION WITH THE AUDIENCE. (3) A HYBRID EVENT OFFERED AN IN-PERSON TOUR OF THE THOMAS HARRISON HOUSE STONE PROPERTY. FOLLOWING THE TOUR, ARCHAEOLOGIST CAROLE NASH'S PRESENTATION IDENTIFIED WHY THE PROPERTY IS NOT THE THOMAS HARRISON HOUSE, ALONG WITH UPDATES FROM RECENT FINDINGS. NASH'S TALK WAS BROADCAST LIVE VIA WEBINAR.
