OUR GOAL IS "TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE MEANS FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS THROUGHOUT THE TWO CITIES AND ADJOINING AREAS," ACCORDING TO THE BY-LAWS OF THE SPCA OF PETERSBURG AND COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA. IN ORDER TO DO THIS, WE: * PROVIDE A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO REPORT SUSPECTED CRUELTY OR NEED FOR INTERVENTION. WE FOLLOW UP ON REPORTS OF CRUELTY OR DISTRESS BY WORKING WITH CITY OR COUNTY POLICE. WE ADDRESS OTHER MEASURES, SUCH AS THE NEED FOR NEW LAWS, AFFECTING THE WELFARE OF ALL ANIMALS. * PROVIDE LOW-COST SPAY AND NEUTER ASSISTANCE IN COOPERATION WITH AREA VETERINARIANS TO PREVENT A SURPLUS OF ANIMALS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE DESTROYED. * PROVIDE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FOR TREATMENT OF ILL OR INJURED ANIMALS WHERE SUFFERING OR DEATH WOULD OCCUR, ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. * PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES TO FIND HOMES FOR ADOPTABLE SHELTER ANIMALS AND WORK WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TOWARD THAT COMMON GOAL. * PROVIDE TRAP RENTAL AND INSTRUCTION TO AID INDIVIDUALS IN THE TRAP

THE SPCA OF PETERSBURG AND COLONIAL HEIGHTS HANDLED IN EXCESS OF 2,900 CALLS FROM THE PUBLIC IN 2021. ADDITIONAL CALLS WERE RECEIVED AND HANDLED BY VOLUNTEERS AFTER OFFICE HOURS. THE AREA OF SERVICE INCLUDED: COLONIAL HEIGHTS, PETERSBURG, CHESTERFIELD, DINWIDDIE, PRINCE GEORGE, HOPEWELL, FT. LEE AND OTHERS. THE MAJORITY OF CALLS WERE FOR SPAY/NEUTER ASSISTANCE WHICH TOTALED 1,518. INFORMATION CALLS: 825MEDICAL ASSISTANCE: 146MEDICAL EXAM CERTIFICATES: 473 OTHER CALLS WERE RELATED TO WANTED ANIMALS, AVAILABLE ANIMALS, LOST AND FOUND PETS, TRAP RENTAL, DONATIONS, AND CRUELTY AND DISTRESS MATTERS.THE TOP THREE EXPENSE ITEMS FOR 2021:VETERINARIAN BILLS: THE COST OF SPAYING AND NEUTERING, ASSISTING WITH MEDICAL EXPENSES THAT ARE BEYOND PET OWNER'S CAPABILITY SUCH AS HEARTWORM TREATMENT WHICH RUNS IN EXCESS OF $600, SPCA PAYS A PORTION. SPCA HAS A PROGRAM WORKED OUT WITH AREA VETERINARIANS TO PROVIDE MEDICAL EXAMS FOR NEWLY ADOPTED PETS. THESE EXAMS WOULD OTHERWISE COST THE PET OWNER IN EXCESS OF $35.00.
