POLICY RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY: SAALT ENGAGED IN POLICY ANALYSIS AND ADVOCACY ON KEY ISSUES AFFECTING SOUTH ASIANS, INCLUDING IMMIGRANT JUSTICE AND HATE VIOLENCE, AND THE CONTINUING IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ACROSS THESE ISSUES. SAALT PRESENTS COMMUNITY-BASED POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES. SAALT ALSO RELEASES POLICY REPORTS AND ISSUES BRIEFS ON VARIOUS TOPICS WITH UNIQUE ANALYSIS FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF AUDIENCES, INCLUDING SOUTH ASIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY MEMBERS, MEDIA, AND POLICYMAKERS.(SEE SCHEDULE O FOR CONTINUATION)
PARTNERSHIPS: CURRENTLY 50 SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS FROM REGIONS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES FORM THE NATIONAL COALITION OF SOUTH ASIAN ORGANIZATIONS ("NCSO") WHICH IS FACILITATED BY SAALT. COALITION PARTNERS RANGE FROM MEMBER-LED ORGANIZATIONS, SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND VOLUNTEER COLLECTIVES THAT FOCUS ON A WIDE VARIETY OF ISSUES SUCH AS MENTAL HEALTH, GENDER JUSTICE, RACIAL JUSTICE, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE, AND WORKERS RIGHTS. SAALT WORKS CLOSELY WITH PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT THEIR WORK AND LEVERAGE THEIR EXPERTISE TO INFORM OUR FEDERAL POLICY AGENDA. THROUGH THE EARLY COVID PERIOD OF 20-22, SAALT PARTNERED WITH VARIOUS COALITIONS TO GENERATE RESOURCES, FOR COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES.
COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION:SAALT HAS OVER THE YEARS DEVELOPED ITS CULTURAL ANALYSIS AND REALIZED THE NEED TO BECOME INTENTIONALLY FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING ITS IDENTITY AND PURPOSE THROUGH THE LENS OF CASTE, CLASS, RACE, GENDER, CULTURE, & ABILITY. SINCE 2021, SAALT HAS INCREASED ITS INTERNAL POLITICAL EDUCATION AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT AND SCALED DOWN ON EXTERNAL PROGRAMMING. SAALT HAS SINCE MOBILIZED AS STAFF AND BOARD ARE THE FIRST COMMUNITY OF FOLK SAALT IS ACCOUNTABLE TO, THEY HAVE BEEN MOBILIZED TO PARTICIPATE IN CAPACITY BUILDING AND POLITICAL EDUCATION SESSIONS. SAALT HAS IMPLEMENTED A HATE VIOLENCE SURVIVOR PROJECT TO LEARN FROM SURVIVORS AND DEEPEN ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYSIS AROUND CULTURAL HATE VIOLENCE, SURVIVAL, SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT, WELL BEING AND HEALING. THE PROJECT CULMINATED WITH A VIRTUAL FILM SCREENING FOR WHICH SURVIVOR COMMUNITY AND PARTNERS WERE MOBILIZED.
COMMUNICATIONS: SAALT'S COMMUNICATIONS WORK IS FOCUSED ON INFORMING AND INFLUENCING THE NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON TRENDS IMPACTING SOUTH ASIANS TO MEDIA, STAKEHOLDERS, AND TO THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS SHIFTING NARRATIVES ABOUT AND WITHIN SOUTH ASIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES. SAALT WRITES OPINION EDITORIALS, MAINTAINS A WEBSITE, AND ENGAGED IN ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS AND SOUTH MEDIA OUTREACH. WE CONTINUED OUR NEWSLETTERS TO OUR SUPPORTERS AND THE PUBLIC, AND PROVIDE MONTHLY REPORTS AND ANALYSIS OF OUR VAST HATE VIOLENCE DATABASE, AND CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR SOCIAL MEDIA OUTREACH.
