SILENCE IS VIOLENCE AND SPECIAL PROJECTS: YPT IS THE ONLY PROFESSIONAL THEATER DEDICATED ENTIRELY TO ARTS EDUCATION & PRODUCING STUDENT-WRITTEN WORK. EACH YEAR, YPT PRODUCES AN ANNUAL PERFORMANCE SERIES OF STUDENT-WRITTEN PLAYS, WHICH ARE ATTENDED BY 1,000 AUDIENCE MEMBERS FROM ACROSS THE REGION. THIS SERIES INCLUDES SPECIAL PROJECTS FOCUSING ON MENTORING YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS AS THEY DEVELOP FULL-LENGTH PLAYS FOR PRODUCTION AS WELL AS SILENCE IS VIOLENCE (SIV), YPTS CORE ANNUAL PRODUCTION. SIV IS YPTS MOST IMMEDIATE & DIRECT ROUTE OF ADDRESSING SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES AFFECTING WASHINGTON, DC AREA YOUTH THROUGH PERFORMANCE & COMMUNITY DIALOGUE.

IN-SCHOOL PLAYWRITING PROGRAM: YPTS IN-SCHOOL PLAYWRITING PROGRAM (ISP) BRINGS ACADEMICALLY RIGOROUS ARTS EDUCATION WORKSHOPS INTO CLASSROOMS AT NO COST TO STUDENTS OR THEIR FAMILIES. ISP WEAVES THE ART OF PLAYWRITING INTO SCHOOL-DAY INSTRUCTION, ENHANCING LITERACY, CREATIVE EXPRESSION AND COMMUNICATION. OVER THE COURSE OF 12 IN-CLASS WORKSHOPS LED BY A PROFESSIONAL YPT TEACHING ARTIST, STUDENTS EXPLORE THE MECHANICS OF LANGUAGE, DRAMA AND SELF-EXPRESSION. THE PROGRAM CULMINATES WITH EACH STUDENT WRITING THEIR VERY OWN PLAY, AND YPT BRINGS CAREER ACTORS INTO THE CLASSROOM TO PERFORM THESE ORIGINAL PIECES. SEEING PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS BRING THEIR WORDS TO LIFE IS AN EMPOWERING EXPERIENCE THAT SHOWS YOUNG PEOPLE WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY MATTERS. IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, YPT OUTFITTED THEIR HEADQUARTERS AS A TEMPORARY PRODUCTION STUDIO AND CREATED WRITERS AT PLAY, A SET OF DIGITAL TOOLS THAT EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES CAN USE TO TEACH LEARNERS PLAYWRITING.
