THE INSTITUTE WAS ESTABLISHED AS A MEANS FOR THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH AND NON-GOVERNMENT AEROSPACE RESEARCH GRANTS, AS WELL AS OTHER RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES. THESE INCLUDE CONDUCTING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND STUDIES, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF AEROSPACE EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS THAT REQUIRE A BROAD INDUSTRY CONSENSUS OF RESULTS.

CONDUCTED RESEARCH AND TESTING ON THE FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS OF ACCRETION AND SHEDDING OF HIGH ALTITUDE ICE CRYSTALS. THIS INCLUDED (BUT NOT LIMITED) TO THE FOLLOWING: ICE CRYSTAL MELTING, ACCRETION THERMODYNAMICS, EROSION CHARACTERISTICS, MIXED PHASE ACCRETION, CRYSTAL DRAG AND SHEAR FORCES ON ICE PARTICLES. ALSO THE CREATION OF DATABASES THAT WOULD PERMIT THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS DESCRIBING THE PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH ALTITUDE CRYSTALS, IN ORDER TO MITIGATE ICE CRYSTAL EVENTS.
