Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
OUR MISSION IS TO "STIR CURIOSITY" BY CONNECTING ART AND SCIENCE IN THE SPIRIT OF JOHN STEINBACK, ED RICKETTS, AND THEIR JOURNEY ON THE WESTERN FLYER.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
RESTORATION OF THE WESTERN FLYER: WE WORKED WITH SHIPWRIGHTS AND CRAFTSPEOPLE IN PORT TOWNSEND, WASHINGTON, TO CONTINUE CAREFULLY RESTORING THE WESTERN FLYER WITH THE GOAL OF PRESERVING ITS HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE WHILE EQUIPPING IT WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY. USING SUSTAINABLY SOURCED WOOD, WE REPLACED 90 PERCENT OF THE HULL AND 20 PERCENT OF THE DECKHOUSE. ON JUNE 29, 2022, THE WESTERN FLYER RETURNED TO THE WATER AND WAS TOWED TO SEATTLE, WHERE IT WILL HAVE A HYBRID ENGINE INSTALLED BEFORE RETURNING TO MONTEREY BAY TO BE PUT BACK INTO SERVICE.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: OUR COMMUNITY JOURNAL PROJECT CONNECTED SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION AND CREATIVE WRITING MENTORS WITH ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES TO PROVIDE LESSONS ON DRAWING TECHNIQUES, FIELD SKETCHING, AND NATURE JOURNALING. IN 2021-22, THE PROJECT SERVED 551 STUDENTS AND 18 EDUCATORS THROUGHOUT MONTEREY COUNTY. WE ALSO MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS DEVELOPING OUR ONBOARD OCEANOGRAPHY PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS, WITH INPUT FROM EIGHT LOCAL TEACHERS AND AN EDUCATION EVALUATOR, AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH STANFORD AND THE NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL. WE ORGANIZED A "STUDENT HISTORY SLAM" AS PART OF THE MONTEREY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S "LOCAL HISTORY SLAM" EVENT, WITH TWENTY-TWO STUDENTS DELIVERING PRESENTATIONS ON LOCAL HISTORY DURING LIVE-VIRTUAL EVENTS. WE ALSO PILOTED AN INTERTIDAL ZONE BIOBLITZ, A CITIZEN SCIENCE PROGRAM THAT INVITES COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO CATALOG AND IDENTIFY MARINE INVERTEBRATES USING THE PROGRAM INATURALIST. BY PARTICIPATING IN COMMUNITY-FOCUSED EVENTS AND FESTIVALS, WE RAISED AWARENESS ABOUT THE HISTORIC WESTERN FLYER AND THE LESSONS OF STEINBECK AND RICKETTS WHILE PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PUBLIC TO INTERACT WITH THE ICONIC VESSEL. WE OFFERED HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS REGULAR TOURS OF THE WESTERN FLYER AND REACHED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF VIEWERS THROUGH YOUTUBE VIDEOS THAT WE PRODUCED ABOUT THE RESTORATION PROCESS. ON JUNE 29, WHEN THE WESTERN FLYER RETURNED TO THE WATER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS, MORE THAN 100 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN PORT TOWNSEND SHOWED UP TO CELEBRATE AND SEE THE WESTERN FLYER OFF.
