EXTRAFOOD.ORG OPERATES A COUNTY-WIDE FOOD RECOVERY PROGRAM IN MARIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WHERE 1 IN 5 PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH HUNGER. EXTRAFOOD IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION THAT RESCUES EXCESS FRESH FOOD FROM ANY MARIN BUSINESS OR SCHOOL AND IMMEDIATELY DELIVERS THE FOOD TO SAFETY NET PARTNERS - SUCH AS SENIOR HOUSING CENTERS, AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND HOMELESS SHELTERS - SERVING MARINS MOST VULNERABLE CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND FAMILIES, 365 DAYS A YEAR AND FREE OF CHARGE.
AND, EXTRAFOOD OPERATES A COMMUNITY MEALS PROGRAM, WHICH USES THE EXCESS CAPACITY OF RESTAURANTS AND CATERERS TO GIVE FRESHLY-MADE MEALS TO PEOPLE IN NEED. IN 2021, EXTRAFOOD'S SMALL STAFF AND 300 VOLUNTEERS, ORGANIZED, RESCUED, AND DELIVERED 954,000 POUNDS THE EQUIVELENT OF 795,000 MEALS FROM 88 BUSINESSES, SUCH AS GROCERY STORES, RESTAURANTS, CATERERS, AND FARMS, AND DELIVERED THE FOOD TO 155 NONPROFIT DISTRIBUTION PARTNERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.
EXTRAFOOD REACHED MORE THAN 8,500 PEOPLE EACH MONTH WITH PREPARED FOOD, FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, DAIRY PRODUCTS, EGGS, MEAT, BAKED GOODS, AND PACKAGED GOODS. AND,EXTRAFOOD REDUCED THE MASSIVE IMPACT OF FOOD WASTE ON LOCAL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, PREVENTING 79,000 POUNDS OF METHANE FROM WARMING THE PLANET. EXTRAFOOD IS ENDING HUNGER DIFFERENTLY -- BY LEADING A MOVEMENT TO TRANSFORM MARINSFOOD SYSTEM: FROM WASTING FOOD TO DONATING IT FOR PEOPLE IN NEED. AS A RESULT, INVESTING IN EXTRAFOOD CREATES TRIPLE IMPACT: ON HUNGER, ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS, AND ON PERMANENT CHANGE IN OUR FOOD SYSTEM. IN 2021, EXTRAFOODS EIGHTH YEAR OF OPERATION, THE ORGANIZATION MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS TOWARD ITS FIRST MAJOR GOAL:ENROLLING EVERY POSSIBLE MARIN BUSINESS AND SCHOOL IN ITS PROGRAM, AND RESCUING EVERY POSSIBLE POUND OF EXCESS FRESH FOOD FOR MARINS MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE.INVESTING IN EXTRAFOOD IS INVESTING IN A VISION: A VISION OF FOOD JUSTICE: EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY SHOULD HAVE THE FOOD THEY NEED.
