THE CENTER FOR MEDICAL INTEROPERABILITY HAS ESTABLISHED A CENTRALIZED LABORATORY TASKED WITH SERVICING AS A NEUTRAL ENVIRONMENT FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS TO IDENTIFY TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS TO THE CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF MEDICAL INTEROPERABILITY. THE PROGRAM GOAL IS TO ESTABLISH AN INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT PLUG-AND-PLAY HEALTHCARE INTEROPERABILITY WITH RELIABLE DATA SYSTEMS CONNECTIVITY AND THE APPROPRIATE LEVELS OF MEDICAL GRADE DATA SECURITY, THUS ENABLING DATA SYSTEMS TO CONNECT SEAMLESSLY, EXCHANGE SECURE DATA, AND OFFER CLINICIANS THE ABILITY TO USE THE DATA FOR SAFER AND MORE OPTIMIZED HEALTHCARE.A COMMON MEDICAL INTEROPERABILITY INFRASTRUCTURE WILL:1) BENEFIT THE PUBLIC BY IMPROVING PATIENT SAFETY, ASSURING TRUST, SECURITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF HEALTH INFORMATION, AND ENHANCING ACCESS TO CARE, 2) DEVELOP COMMON STANDARDS-BASED ARCHITECTURE, SPECIFICATIONS AND REFERENCE DESIGNS FOR TRUSTED AND INTEROPERABLE HOSPITAL DEVICES AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS, 3) DESIGN AND OVERSEE PROTOCOLS FOR TESTING AND CERTIFY THAT MEMBER SPECIFIED REQUIREMENTS ARE FULLFILLED, AND 4) FACILITATE THE EDUCATION OF ALL HEALTH SYSTEMS' STAKEHOLDERS CONCERNING SOLUTIONS AND BEST PRACTICES RELATED TO MEDICAL INTEROPERABILITY.
