THE MISSION OF THE MESA REFUGE IS TO PROVIDE TIME, SPACE AND SUPPORT FOR WRITERS AND OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE TO ADDRESS THE PRESSING ISSUES OF OUR TIME, WITH A CONCENTRATION ON THE ENVIRONMENT, THE ECONOMY AND SOCIAL EQUITY.

IN 2023, MESA REFUGE HAD A FULL SCHEDULE OF ONE AND TWO-WEEK WRITING RESIDENCIES, EACH OF WHICH SERVED 3 PEOPLE AT A TIME. WE HOSTED 43 WRITERS AND ACTIVISTS IN OUR SPRING AND FALL RESIDENCY PROGRAMS, 24 OF WHOM WERE AWARDED FELLOWSHIPS. WE PARTNERED WITH OUR LOCAL RADIO STATION, KWMR, TO PRODUCE BIWEEKLY AUTHOR INTERVIEWS WITH EACH RESIDENT. WE HOSTED 11 DIY RETREATS, SERVING 8 PRIOR MESA REFUGE RESIDENTS AND 21 OTHER WRITERS WORKING ON PROJECTS RELATED TO OUR AREAS OF FOCUS (THE ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMIC EQUITY, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE). WE ALSO HOSTED 9 ALUM WEEKS, WHICH PROVIDED TIME AND SPACE TO 27 PREVIOUS MESA REFUGE RESIDENTS. WE OFFERED, IN COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, 6 IN-PERSON AUTHOR EVENTS FEATURING MESA REFUGE ALUMNI.
