THE LOS ANGELES UNITED METHODIST MUSEUM OF SOCIAL JUSTICE (THE ORGANIZATION) WAS FORMED ON JULY 12, 2012, TO IMPLEMENT A REQUIREMENT IN THE COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WITH THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES, WHICH PERMITS LA PLAZA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (THE CHURCH) TO OCCUPY ITS HISTORIC BUILDING AT THE CORNER OF OLVERA STREET AND PASEO DE LA PLAZA IN THE EL PUEBLO DE LOS ANGELES HISTORICAL MONUMENT (EL PUEBLO). ONE OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WAS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A MUSEUM TO ILLUMINATE AND EDUCATE VISITORS AND TOURISTS TO EL PUEBLO ABOUT THIS HISTORICAL WORK OF THE METHODIST CHURCH AMONG MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS AND THE UNDERCLASS OF EARLY LOS ANGELES. THE ORGANIZATIONS MISSION STATEMENT IS AS FOLLOWS:THE MUSEUM OF SOCIAL JUSTICE IS DEDICATED TO TELLING THE NEGLECTED STORIES OF THE DIVERSE PEOPLE OF LOS ANGELES. BY SHOWCASING THE HISTORY OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF MARGINALIZED GROUPS, THE MUSEUM INSPIRES VISITORS TO ENGAGE WITH SOCIAL JUSTICE PRINCIPLES AND ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE.
