THE GREAT PLAINS TRIBAL LEADER'S HEALTH BOARD PROVIDES KEY ADVOCACY FOR ITS NATIVE AMERICAN CONSTITUENTS, SO THEY HAVE ACCESS TO THE HIGHEST QUALITY, MOST COMPREHENSIVE AND UP-TO-DATE HEALTH RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN THE AREAS OF RESEARCH, EDUCATION, ASSISTANCE, PREVENTION AND OUTREACH.

ESTABLISHED IN 1986, THE GREAT PLAINS TRIBAL LEADER'S HEALTH BOARD (GPTLHB) IS AN ORGANIZATION REPRESENTING THE EIGHTEEN TRIBAL COMMUNITIES IN THE FOUR-STATE REGION OF SOUTH DAKOTA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA AND IOWA. THROUGH PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICES AND THE FORMATION OF TRIBAL PARTNERSHIPS, WE WORK TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLES WE SERVE BY PROVIDING PUBLIC HEALTH SUPPORT AND HEALTH CARE ADVOCACY. SERVING AS A LIAISON BETWEEN THE GREAT PLAINS TRIBES AND THE VARIOUS HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES DIVISIONS INCLUDING THE GREAT PLAINS AREA INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE, GPTLHB WORKS TO REDUCE PUBLIC HEALTH DISPARITIES AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLES WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE EIGHTEEN GREAT PLAINS TRIBAL NATIONS AND COMMUNITIES.IT IS OUR VISION THAT ALL TRIBAL NATIONS AND COMMUNITIES IN THE GREAT PLAINS WILL REACH OPTIMUM HEALTH AND WELLNESS THROUGH LASTING PARTNERSHIPS WITH HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS AND EMBRACE CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT VALUES EMPOWERED BY TRIBAL SOVEREIGNTY. UNITED UNDER THE GPTLHB UMBRELLA, OUR TRIBAL CONSTITUENTS CAN COMPETE FOR POPULATION-BASED GRANTS AND RESOURCES THAT MAY NOT OTHERWISE BE AVAILABLE TO THEM. THROUGH GPTLHB, TRIBES ARE EMPOWERING THEMSELVES TO ADDRESS THEIR INDIVIDUAL HEALTH RESOURCE NEEDS IN AN EFFECTIVE WAY.


THE OYATE HEALTH CENTER IS A TRIBALLY OWNED AND OPERATED WALK-IN PRIMARY CARE CLINIC LOCATED IN RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA. ON JULY 21, 2019 THE GREAT PLAINS TRIBAL LEADER'S HEALTH BOARD TOOK OVER MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE RAPID CITY SERVICE UNIT ON BEHALF OF THE OGLALA SIOUX AND CHEYENNE RIVER SIOUX TRIBES THROUGH PUBLIC LAW 93-638 (THE INDIAN SELF-DETERMINATION ACT); IT WAS BOTH AN EXPRESSION OF SOVEREIGNTY AND THE DEPLOYMENT OF A PROVEN STRATEGY.
