SCREEN AND TREAT PEOPLE FOR RETINAL DISEASES IN UNDERSERVED AREAS AROUND THE WORLD, THROUGH OUTREACH AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS. CONSIDERING THE COVID SITUATION, WE HAD TO ORGANIZE AND ARRANGE FOR EYE CARE SPECIALISTS FROM LOCAL AREAS TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME AND PROVIDE EXPERTISE FOR FREE TO TRAVEL TO UNDERSERVED AREAS CLOSE TO WHERE THEY LIVE. THEY EVALUATE PATIENTS ON SITES WORKING WITH OUR PARTNER EYE CLINICS. THIS WORK IS IMPORTANT TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS IN THESE UNDERSERVED AREAS. WE REIMBURSE THEIR BASIC TRAVEL COSTS.
HELP BUILD INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS TO HELP PROVIDE ACCESS TO THOSE IN NEED. THIS WAS DONE BY HELPING ORGANIZE SCREENING OF PATIENTS IN UNDERSERVED AREAS IN SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA, A CITY IN BOLIVIA WHERE EYE CARE SPECIALISTS, USING EYE CAMERAS AND TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS THAT WERE ABLE TO SCREEN PATIENTS WHO HAD DIABETIC RETINOPATHY. THOSE WHO DID NOT HAVE A TREATABLE CONDITION WERE ASKED TO RETURN FOR FOLLOWUP LATER, BUT THOSE WHO HAD A TREATABLE CONDITION WERE OFFERED LASER TREATMENT, INJECTIONS IN THE EYE OR SURGERY.
