THE MISSION OF SCIENCE PLAY-SPACE INITIATIVE SPI, INC. IS TO ENHANCE THE KNOX COUNTY COMMUNITY BY BRINGING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO EXPLORE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND HUMAN INTERACTION THROUGH PLAY.

SPI OPERATES A COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND RECREATION CENTER WHERE FAMILIES CAN DROP IN FOR PLAY-BASED LEARNING TOGETHER; THE ACTIVITIES ARE PRESENTED THROUGH THE LENSES OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION FACILITATES SUMMER CAMPS AND INVESTS RESOURCES IN FACILITATING OTHER COMMUNITY EDUCATION PRGRAMMING OUTSIDE ITS PHYSICAL LOCATION. TO CONFORM TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, STAFF INTRODUCED "SPI TO GO" IN 2020 AND CONTINUED INTO 20021 WHICH INCLUDED FREE FACILITATED OUTDOOR OUTINGS FOR FAMILIES AND FREE AT-HOME ACTIVITY KITS THEMED TO ALIGN WITH THE OUTINGS. APPROXIMATELY 3,387 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THIS INITIATIVE.
SPI FACILITATED MULTIPLE SESSIONS OF SUMMER ENRICHMENT CAMPS AT OUTDOOR VENUES, SERVING 1,150 SCHOOL-AGE PARTICIPANTS THROUGHOUT JUNE AND JULY. ITS ABILITY TO OTHERWISE OFFER COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMMING AT PARTNER VENUES AND FESTIVALS CONTINUED TO BE SOMEWHAT LIMITED BY COVID RESTRICTIONS.
