SECOND HELPINGS ATLANTA "SHA", IS A NON-PROFIT FOOD RESCUE ORGANIZATION WHOSE MISSION IS TO REDUCE HUNGER AND FOOD WASTE IN THE METRO ATLANTA AREA BY RESCUING SURPLUS FOOD AND DELIVERING IT TO PARTNER AGENCIES WHO FEED THE HUNGRY EVERY DAY. WITH A COMMUNITY OF OVER 900 VOLUNTEERS, SHA RESCUED OVER 5.7 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD IN 2023, ENOUGH TO PROVIDE MORE THAN 4.8 MILLION NUTRITIOUS MEALS THAT OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE ENDED UP IN A LANDFILL.

THE VALUE OF THE RESCUED FOOD IS CALCULATED AT $1.93/LB. WE RESCUED 5,715,911 POUNDS OF FOOD IN 2023. THEREFORE, THE VALUE OF THIS FOOD IS $11,202,077. THIS AMOUNT WAS INCLUDED IN BOTH STATEMENT OF REVENUE PART VIII AND STATEMENT OF FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES PART IX. IN ADDITION, WE PARTNERED WITH ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK TO PROVIDE PREPARED MEALS. WE CONVERTED THE NUMBER OF MEALS TO POUNDS BY USING THE USDA/FEEDING AMERICA ACCEPTED MULTIPLIER (1.2 POUNDS = 1 MEAL), AND THEN MULTIPLIED THOSE POUNDS BY THE SAME DOLLAR VALUE OF $1.93/LB.
