THE IMPROVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE HAWAII COFFEE, FLORICULTURE/NURSERY, MACADAMIA NUTS, AND PAPAYA INDUSTRIES THROUGH RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, MARKETING AND PROMOTION, AND EDUCATION AND COOPERATION ON A NON-PARTISAN BASIS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
USING NIFA FUNDS, A WIDE RANGE OF COFFEE LEAF RUST RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ARE UNDERWAY IN HAWAII AND PUERTO RICO. FIRST YEAR RESULTS POINT TO POTENTIAL AGRONOMIC REFINEMENTS IN THE FIELD, AS WELL AS PROPER TIMING AND USE OF FUNGICIDAL SPRAYS, THAT MAY REDUCE INFECTION DAMAGE AND STABILIZE CROP LOSS. AS WE LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FUNGUS' BEHAVIOR IN BOTH HAWAII AND PUERTO RICO, AND SEE THE ECONOMIC BURDEN OF MAINTAINING SUSCEPTIBLE TREES, GROWERS ARE INCREASINGLY INTERESTED IN RESISTANT VARIETIES. STAKEHOLDERS HAVE TAKEN A PROACTIVE ROLE IN THIS PROJECT, ASSISTING SCIENTISTS WITH IDENTIFYING VARIETIES CURRENTLY IN THE FIELD AND COMMUNICATING THEIR PREFERENCES ON THE TASTE PROFILE. THE WORK UNDER THIS GRANT HAS BROAD VISIBILITY IN THE GROWER COMMUNITY.
A NUMBER OF MARKETING PROGRAM ACTIVITIES WERE CONDUCTED IN THE TAIWAN AND CANADA MARKETS USING USDA FOREIGN AGRICULTURE SERVICE'S MARKET ACCESS FUNDING. THIS INCLUDES TRADE SHOW ACTIVITIES, SOCIAL MEDIA, MARKET STUDIES, REVERSE TRADE MISSIONS AND DEVELOPMENT OF PHOTOGRAPHIC AND VIDEO MEDIA.
A REVERSE TRADE MISSION TOOK PLACE FROM OCTOBER 26 - NOV. 2ND, WITH FUNDS USED TO BRING THIRTEEN TAIWANESE COFFEE BUYERS TO FOUR MAIN COFFEE-GROWING REGIONS IN HAWAII: OAHU, KONA, KA'U, AND PUNA/HILO DISTRICTS. THE TARGET MARKETS OF TAIWAN WAS CHOSEN DUE TO BOTH DBEDT'S OFFICE PRESENCE IN THESE MARKETS (SPECIFICALLY TAIPEI & BEIJING), AS WELL AS SHAC'S PARTICIPATION IN THE MARKET ACCESS PROGRAM (MAP), A GRANT-BASED PROGRAM. THE BUYERS WERE INTRODUCED TO OVER FORTY HAWAIIAN COFFEE GROWERS WITH SALES GENERATED FROM THE EVENT.
