TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR WOMEN LEAVING INCARCERATION. ESTHER RESIDENCE PROVIDES A SAFE, NURTURING COMMUNITY THAT IS BASED ON SAFETY, RESPECT AND DIGNITY

12 WOMEN WERE RESIDENTS IN 2022 WITH AN AVERAGE STAY OF 5 MONTHS. THEY CAME FROM JAIL AND OTHER PLACES AND WERE REFERRED BY PROBATION OR SELF-REFERRED. 3 MOVED OUT ON THEIR OWN, 2 WENT WITH FRIENDS AND 1 RETURNED TO JAIL. 11 OF THE 12 HAD SUBSTANCE USE DIORDERS, ALL HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSIS. ONE CONTINUED HER COLLEGE COURSES, ONE SOUGHT HELP FROM THE COURT FOR VISITATION WITH HER CHILDREN AND TWO WERE IN TREATMENT COURTS. WHEN ANYONE RELAPSED, THEY WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVISE AND FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEIR RECOVERY GOALS. GRANTS WERE SOUGHT TO FILL THE NEED FOR DENTAL HELP, CLOTHING, PARTIAL DEPOSITS ON APARTMENTS, BUS PASSES AND PARENTING COACHING. FORMER RESIDENTS HAVE RETURNED TO HELP WITH COMPUTER NEEDS, TO VISIT AND WITH CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR CURRENT RESIDENTS. THE PARENTING COACH CONTINUED WORKING WITH A RESIDENT WHO HAD MOVED OUT AND REUNITED WITH HER CHILD. OUR VERY COMMITTED BOARD MEMBERS ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN 3 MAJOR FUND RAISERS, HIRED A GRANT WRITER AND HELD A FULL DAY STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION REGARDING PURCHASING THE HOUSE AND REPLACING THE NON-PAID SISTERS WITH PAID STAFF. EVENTS RAISED $79,000 AND ANNUAL DONATIONS TOTALED OVER $43,000. IN-KIND VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE VALUED AT $7,225 AND GIFTS IN-KIND TOTALED $8,300. STAFF INCLUDES 3 SISTERS, A FULL TIME PAID RESIDENTIAL STAFF AND A PART TIME PAID SECRETARY. STAFF CONTINUES TO ENGAGE IN CASE MANAGEMENT WITH THE RESIDENTS TO HELP THEM MEET THEIR NEEDS AND GOALS. THEY ALSO HELP FORMER RESIDENTS WITH FOOD AND OTHER NEEDS. OUTSIDE AGENCIES, CHURCH GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS CONTINUE TO OFFER THEIR SERVICES AND DONATE MONEY AND ITEMS.
