EDUCATION OUTREACH IN 2021 MNP WAS ABLE TO BALANCE BOTH VIRTUAL LEARNING AND WELCOMED BACK OUR IN-PERSON OPPORTUNITIES. FIELD TRIPS OF VARIOUS AGES RETURNED, REACHING OVER 1,300 STUDENTS. MNPS VIDEOS CONTINUED TO BE IN HIGH DEMAND, REACHING 18,302 PEOPLE. IN ADDITION, MNP CONNECTED WITH OVER 20,000 INDIVIDUALS VIA OUR E-NEWSLETTERS TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT WE WERE WORKING ON. WE CONTINUED TO REACH THE YOUNGEST NATURE ENTHUSIAST WITH CREATED VIDEOS OF A NATURE CRAFT PAIRED WITH A STORY FOR A VIRTUAL STORY TIME EXPERIENCE MONTHLY. MNP ALSO PRESENTED AT 3 VIRTUAL CONFERENCES AND OFFERED 6 UNPAID INTERNSHIPS FROM SEVERAL COLLEGES. MNPS 5-MILES OF TRAILS ATTRACTED EVEN MORE VISITORS AS PEOPLE TURNED TO THE OUTDOORS FOR TRANQUILITY. APPROXIMATELY 45,000 WALKERS, RUNNERS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, AND WILDLIFE LOVERS CAME TO THE PRESERVE. MNP IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC DAILY, SUNRISE TO SUNSET.
LAND RESTORATION MONITORING MNP FOLLOWS A 150-YEAR LAND RESTORATION PLAN TO RETURN 510 ACRES OF PREDOMINANTLY AGRICULTURAL LAND TO ITS PRE-SETTLEMENT CONDITION AS A MESIC BEECH-MAPLE-OAK FOREST. STAFF, STUDENTS, AND VOLUNTEERS PLANT NATIVE PLANT SPECIES, REMOVE INVASIVE PLANTS, AND MONITOR RESTORATION EFFORTS VIA WATER QUALITY TESTING AND FLORA SURVEYS TO MEASURE THE PLANS PROGRESS AND MAKE APPROPRIATE ADJUSTMENTS. THE PLANS SUCCESS IS SEEN IN MNPS GROWING BIODIVERSITY THAT MAKES IT AN EXCELLENT OUTDOOR CLASSROOM IN WHICH TO STUDY THE ENVIRONMENT. MNPS NEWEST RESTORATION HELPER IS A CONSERVATION CANINE THAT HAS BEEN TRAINED TO SCENT INVASIVE AND NATIVE SPECIES. THE DOG, TILIA, WAS ACQUIRED SUMMER OF 2016. IN 2021, STAFF PLANTED 3,500 TREE SEEDLINGS AND 330 CONTAINER TREES AND SHRUBS. AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF RESTORATION IS THE RESEARCH AND MONITORING WE DO PRIOR. MNP STAFF COMPLETED AMPHIBIAN MONITORING, ACOUSTICAL RECORDING PERTAINING TO BATS, BIRDS AND FROGS, DRAGONFLY SURVEYING AND BLUEBIRD MONITORING. ADDITIONAL PROJECTS WERE COMPLETED WITH LOCAL UNIVERSITIES.
SPECIAL PROJECTS EVERY YEAR VARIOUS FUNDING COMES IN TO FUND SPECIFIC PROJECTS THAT WOULD NORMALLY NOT OCCUR. IN 2021, MNP WAS ABLE TO BUY A NEW UTILITY VEHICLE FOR MOVING PEOPLE AND TOOLS AROUND THE 510 ACRES.
