BIOMIMICRY CLASSENRICHMENT CLASS FOR 7TH AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT OF BIOMIMICRY TO STUDENTS WITH INTERACTIVE EXAMPLES AS WELL AS PRESENTING THEM WITH A PROBLEM TO SOLVE. STUDENTS LEARN THAT BIOMIMICRY IS A WAY OF SOLVING PROBLEMS BY USING NATURE AS INSPIRATION. ONCE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES OF BIOMIMICRY, THEY APPLY WHAT THEY'VE LEARNED IN A MINI, HANDS-ON DESIGN-CHALLENGE, WHERE SMALL GROUPS WILL COME UP WITH POTENTIAL NATURE-INSPIRED PRDUCTS THAT CAN HELP SOLVE A SPECIFIC PROBLEM.
COLUMBIA SCHOLASTIC PRESS CONFERENCEFUNDED STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE COLUMBIA SCHOLASTIC PRESS ASSOCIATION'S FALL CONFERENCE, WHICH OFFERS STUDENTS OVER 80 WORKSHOPS COVERING ALL ASPECTS OF STUDENT PUBLISHING. STUDENTS SIGN UP FOR SIX SESSIONS TO ATTEND THROUGHOUT THE DAY, PARTICIPATING IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AND Q&A OPPORTUNITIES WITH OTHER LEADERS IN MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS, AS WELL AS STUDENT JOURNALISTS AND ARTISTS FROM A VARIETY OF GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS AND DEMOGRAPHICS. AFTER THE CONFERENCE, STUDENTS WILL BE BETTER PREPARED TO ASSUME EDITORIAL POSITIONS AND MANAGE EVERY STAGE OF PRODUCTION FROM ASSIGNING STORIES TO EDITING AND LAYOUT. SCHOOL'S CREATIVE, DESIGN-ORIENTED ELECTIVE COURSES AND EXTRACURRICULAR CLUBS WILL BENEFIT DIRECTLY FROM THIS EXPERIENCE, AND THE STUDENT BODY AS A WHOLE WILL BENEFIT AS READERS OF RHINEBECK REALITY, THE SCHOOL YEARBOOK, AND THE LITERARY MAGAZINE.
HEART RATE MONITORINGENRICHMENT CALSS FOR 7TH AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS. RHINEBECK SCIENCE FOUNDATION FUNDED HEART RATE MONITORS FOR STUDENTS TO CALCULATE TARGET HEART RATE ZONES AND TO ASESS PERSONAL FITNESS. THE MONITORS WOULD ALSO BE USED DURING MINDFULNESS/RELAXATION EXERCISES TO MONITOR PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE. STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO CREATE A FITNESS ACTIVITY/ROUTINE WITHIN THEIR TARGET HEART RATE ZONE. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO INVESTIGATE HOW CHANGING A ROUTINE, PACE, INTENSITY OR WAY THEY MOVE CAN IMPACT HOW FAR THEY TRAVEL AND HEART RATE CHANGES DURING A WORKOUT.
