Part 3 - Line 1
SACRAMENTO SPLASH BRINGS URBAN KIDS INTO NATURE TO EXPLORE, LEARN SCIENCE, AND DISCOVER THEIR ROLE IN PROTECTING THE NATURAL WORLD.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SACRAMENTO SPLASH'S MISSION IS TO HELP CHILDREN UNDERSTAND AND VALUE OUR NATURAL WORLD, AND THIS YEAR, SPLASH DELIVERED ITS SIGNATURE PROGRAM, LIFE IN OUR WATERSHED: INVESTIGATING VERNAL POOLS, TO 76 CLASSES OF 4TH/5TH GRADERS FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE SACRAMENTO AREA. THIS AWARD-WINNING ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE PROGRAM INTEGRATES A 13-LESSON, STANDARDS-BASED SCIENCE CURRICULUM WITH A FIELD TRIP TO THE NEARBY MATHER FIELD VERNAL POOLS. THERE, STUDENTS GET TO MEET THE ANIMALS AND PLANTS THEY'VE BEEN STUDYING IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. THIS INTEGRATION OF CLASSROOM AND EXPERIMENTAL LEARNING IS A UNIQUE AND POWERFUL ASPECT OF THE SPLASH PROGRAM. AS A RESULT, STUDENTS DEVELOP REAL UNDERSTANDING AND COMPASSION FOR THE LIVING THINGS THEY HAVE STUDIED. THEY ALSO BEGIN TO FEEL A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR PROTECTING THE NATURAL RESOURCES THAT THOSE LIVING THINGS RELY ON. THIS IS DEEP EDUCATION THAT TAPS INTO A CHILD'S NATURAL CURIOUSITY ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND THEM AND INSPIRES A PASSION FOR SCIENCE. THIS SPLASH EXPERIENCE IS PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE MANY OF SACRAMENTO'S URBAN KIDS HAVE NO OTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND PLAY IN NATURE. BASED AT MATHER FIELD, AN ISLAND OF OPEN SPACE ONLY 20 MINUTES FROM DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO, SPLASH SERVES STUDENTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND PLACES SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON ENGAGING LOW-INCOME AND MINORITY STUDENTS WHO NEED HELP TO ACCESS NEARBY NATURE.
