Part 3 - Line 4a
FOR THE 10TH STRAIGHT YEAR, WRC ECLIPSED ITS PREVIOUS RECORD FOR ADMISSIONS 19,266 PATIENTS FROM AMONG 199 SPECIES IN 2021, COMPARED TO 17,823 PATIENTS FROM AMONG 203 DIFFERENT SPECIES IN 2020. SINCE 2011, WRC HAS HAD A 145 PERCENT INCREASE IN PATIENTS (11,400 EXTRA PATIENTS). WE EXPERIENCED A LARGE INCREASE FROM 2014 TO 2015 DUE TO THE PARTNERSHIP WITH AHS. HOWEVER, THE LAST TWO YEARS ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN A THIRD OF THAT GROWTH SINCE 2011 (4,291) WITH ANNUAL INCREASES OF 19 PERCENT IN 2020 AND 8 PERCENT IN 2021.57.2 PERCENT OF ALL ADMITS CAME FROM THE TOP FIVE ADMITS.ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM, WE ADMITTED ONLY ONE PATIENT FROM 36 SPECIES AND ONLY TWO FROM 21 DIFFERENT SPECIES.THE EXPLOSIVE GROWTH OF PATIENTS AND THE CHALLENGES OF CARING FOR THEM UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE PANDEMIC LED TO MORE DIFFICULT DECISIONS REGARDING ADMISSIONS AND OUTCOMES. PRE-TREATMENT MORTALITY INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY IN 2021, AND OUR OVERALL RELEASE RATE OF ALL ANIMALS ADMITTED DECREASED TO 26 PERCENT.WHILE A GREATER NUMBER OF PATIENTS DIED BEFORE TREATMENT, OF THE PATIENTS THAT WERE TREATED, NEARLY 70 PERCENT WERE RELEASED OUR BEST RATE EVER. SIGNIFICANTLY, ONLY 11 PERCENT OF THE PATIENTS UNDERGOING TREATMENT DIED WHILE IN OUR CARE. PATIENTS DYING DURING CARE HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED IN RECENT YEARS FROM 46.5 PERCENT IN 2008, TO 18.7 PERCENT IN 2020 AND 23 PERCENT IN 2019. TOUGHER CHOICES AT ADMISSION, BUT LESS SUFFERING IN CARE.WRC PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN EDUCATING STUDENTS ABOUT WILDLIFE MEDICINE. WRC STATE OF THE ART FACILITY, BURGEONING PATIENT LOAD, INTERNATIONALLU ACCLAIMED VET STAFF AND INNOVATIVE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE HAVE RESULTED IN WRC BEING RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE LEADING WILD ANIMAL TEACHING HOSPITALS IN THE COUNTRY.
