PARENTS AS TEACHERS IS A HOME VISITATION PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS PARENTS/CAREGIVERS AND THEIR CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF BIRTH TO FIVE YEARS OLD. MONTHLY OR BI-WEEKLY HOME VISITS WITH A CERTIFIED PARENT EDUCATOR PROVIDE CHILD DEVELOPMENT INFORMATION, AGE-APPROPRIATE CHILD DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES, REGULAR CHILD DEVELOPMENT SCREENINGS, PARENTING SKILLS SUPPORT, AND CONNECTIONS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES. OTHER SUPPORT SYSTEMS ARE OFFERED SUCH AS PARENTING CLASSES, GROUP ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNITY-WIDE CHILD DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS.
THE LITERACY COUNCIL OFFERS ONE-ON-ONE AND GROUP TUTORING SESSIONS TO ADULTS THAT FOCUS ON STRENGTHENING SKILLS IN READING, WRITING AND/OR SPEAKING ENGLISH. VOLUNTEER TUTORS ARE TRAINED AND SUPPORTED BY LITERACY COUNCIL STAFF. STUDENTS AND TUTORS MEET TOGETHER WEEKLY TO WORK ON THE STUDENTS' PERSONAL GOALS WHICH MAY INCLUDE: LEARNING ENGLISH, IMPROVING READING OR WRITING SKILLS, PASSING THE WRITTEN DRIVER'S LICENSES TEST, STUDYING FOR THE U.S. CITIZENSHIP TEST AND NATURALIZATION INTERVIEW, AND MUCH MORE.
