IMPROVE EDUCATION & DISTRIBUTION OF HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WITHIN OUR 11 COUNTY REGION IN NORTHEASTERN WISCONSIN. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY EDUCATING YOUTH REGARDING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN HEALTH CARE, PROVIDING HEALTH CAREERS CAMPS, HEALTH CAREERS ACADEMY, COORDINATING ACADEMIC & CAREER PLANNING PROGRAMS, AND COUNSELING YOUTH ON COLLEGE DEGREE PROGRAMS AND THE APPLICATION PROCESS. CONNECT COLLEGE STUDENTS IN HEALTH CAREER PROGRAMS WITH INTERNSHIPS OPPORTUNITIES & COMMUNITY PROJECTS. PROVIDE INTERPROFESSIONAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING A STATE-WIDE CASE COMPETITION FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS IN HEALTH RELATED MAJORS, INTERPROFESSIONAL STUDENT TRAINING, AND TRAINING FOR HEALTH PROFESSSIONALS AND STUDENTS ON PATIENT SIMULATORS AT LOCAL HEALTH FACILITIES. OUR STAFF ALSO SERVES ON HEALTH-RELATED COMMUNITY BOARDS AND COMMITTEES WHICH PROMOTE ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE AND IMPROVE DISTRIBUTION OF THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE WHILE CONSIDERING SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH FOR COMMUNITES WITHIN OUR REGION. CHANGES IN GRANT REQUIREMENTS HAVE INCREASED PROGRAMMING AT THE COLLEGE-LEVEL FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS. A NEW PROGRAM, AHEC SCHOLARS, PROVIDES A 2-YEAR AUGMENTED DIDACTIC AND CLINICAL TRAINING EDUCATION TO HEALTH PROFESSIONS STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE. THIS TRAINING IS OVER AND ABOVE THE CURRICULM INCLUDED IN THEIR INSTITUTION'S CURRICULUM. THE NEWAHEC REGIONS SHOULD HAVE A MINIMUM OF 15 NEW STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM EACH YEAR.
SERVE AS FISCAL AGENT AND STAFF PROGRAM COORDINATORS FOR VARIOUS PREVENTION PROGRAMS. 1. MANITOWOC SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION - PROVIDES PREVENTION PROGRAMMING TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF ALCOHOL AND OTHER SUBSTANCE ABUSE (AODA) AMONG YOUTH IN MANITOWOC COUNTY. THIS WORK IS FINANCIALLY SUPPORTED BY THE DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES GRANT. 2. RETHINK LAKESHORE TOBACCO PREVENTION NETWORK - PROVIDES PREVENTION PROGRAMMING TO REDUCE THE USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS BY YOUTH IN MANITOWOC, DOOR, KEWAUNEE, SHEBOYGAN, & WINNEBAGO COUNTIES. 3. ALLIANCE FOR WISCONSIN YOUTH - NEWAHEC SERVES AS REGIONAL PREVENTION CENTER FOR THE NORTHEASTERN AND SOUTHERN REGIONS OF AWY. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM OUR PREVENTION STAFF SUPPORTS AND TRAINS COALTIONS FOR AODA PREVENTION ACTIVITIES IN 31 WISCONSIN COUNTIES. 4. PARTNERSHIPS FOR SUCCESS - THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES INTENSIVE AODA PREVENTION IN DANE, ROCK, COLUMBIA, AND MARINETTE COUNTIES, WHICH HAVE BEEN STATISTICALLY RECOGNIZED AS HAVING A HIGHER INCIDENCE OF ABUSE OF PRESCRIPTION AND OTHER DRUGS. THROUGH THIS GRANT ONE COALITION IN EACH OF THE FOUR COUNTIES RECEIVES FUNDING FOR PREVENTION EFFORTS IN THEIR COUNTY. 5. STRATEGIC PREVENTION FRAMEWORK FOR PREVENTION OF PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE - THIS PROGRAM IS PROVIDING DEVELOPMENT OF AODA COALITIONS IN SAUK COUNTY AND DODGE COUNTY, WHERE NO SUCH COALITIONS EXISTED PREVIOUSLY. NEWAHEC'S PREVENTION STAFF HAVE PROVIDED THE EXPERTISE NEEDED TO DEVELOP AND TRAIN THESE NEW COALTIONS AND THEIR MEMBERS IN PROVEN PREVENTION METHODS. 6. STATE TARGETED RESPONSE TO OPIOID ABUSE - THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES SPECIFIED PREVENTION SUPPLIES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PREVENTION ACTIVITIES TO COALITIONS THAT APPLY FOR GRANT FUNDS & INCLUDE AN APPROVED WORK PLAN RELATED TO THE SPECIFIED GRANT ACTIVITES. COALITIONS WITHIN OUR AWY NORTHEAST AND SOUTH REGIONS ARE ABLE TO APPLY FOR FUNDING TO SUPPORT THEIR PREVENTION ACTIVITIES THROUGH THIS GRANT.
NEWAHEC PROVIDES FISCAL SERVICES FOR TWO OTHER AHEC REGIONAL CENTERS, NORTHWEST WISCONSIN AHEC AND WISCONSIN NORTHERN HIGHLAND AHEC, INCLUDING PAYROLL, ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE, ACCOUNTS PAYABLE, AND FISCAL REPORTING TO THE STATE AHEC OFFICE. NEWAHEC ALSO PROVIDES CONSULTING FOR THESE CENTERS REGARDING ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS AND STRATEGIC PLANNING AS NEEDED.
