PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA - WISCONSIN CHAPTER (PVA-WI) WORKS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR VETERANS, IN OUR STATE, LIVING WITH SPINAL CORD INJURY OR DISEASE, INCLUDING THOSE WITH MS AND ALS. OUR WORK IS CARRIED OUT THROUGH A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS.

ADAPTIVE SPORTS AND RECREATION: COORDINATE, ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION IN ACTIVITIES RUN THROUGH THE ZABLOCKI VA MEDICAL CENTER. ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL VETERANS WHEELCHAIR GAMES; AN ANNUAL EVENT CONSISTING OF 19 DIFFERENT SPORTS AT A VARIETY OF ADAPTIVE LEVELS TO PROVIDE INDIVIDUALS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE. THE VA STAFF SUPPORT OUR MEMBERS IN TRAVELING TO AND PARTICIPATING IN THIS MULTI-DAY EVENT. SUPPORT PARTICIPATION IN WINTER AND SUMMER SPORTS CLINICS. THE CHAPTER SUPPORTS A ROBUST SHOOTINGS SPORTS PROGRAM INCLUDING AIR RIFLE, TRAP AND LIVE BIRD HUNTS. THE CHAPTER SUPPORTS A WHEELCHAIR LACROSSE TEAM THAT TRAVELS AROUND THE STATE AS WELL AS OTHER EVENTS. MEMBERSHIP AND SERVICE PROGRAM: PVA BENEFIT SPECIALISTS MAKE SURE THAT VETS UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO THEM AND CAN SERVE AS THEIR VOICE IN THE OFTEN COMPLICATED PROCESS. THE HOSPITAL LIAISON PROGRAM ENSURES THAT OUR VETERANS HAVE A VOICE IN THEIR QUALITY OF CARE AND THE FACILITY. ADDITIONALLY, THE CHAPTER HOLDS AN ANNUAL BANQUET, PIZZA PARTIES, A CHRISTMAS LUNCH AND OTHER EVENTS. THROUGH THE ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM MEMBERS CAN BE REIMBURSED UP TO $50 TWO TIMES PER YEAR, TO PARTICIPATE IN ENTERTAINMENT LIKE A MOVIE, DINNER OUT, A PLAY OR OTHER PERFORMANCE. MEMBERS MAY APPLY FOR A HARDSHIP GRANT OF UP TO $400 TO HELP IN DIFFICULT TIMES. COMMUNICATION PROGRAM: THE GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT SPINAL CORD INJURY, DISEASE, MS AND ALS WITH INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS. EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING AND WHEN OTHERS UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES OF THOSE CONFINED TO A WHEELCHAIR THEY SEE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT. THIS EDUCATION IS DONE THROUGH PRESENTATIONS, BROCHURES AND PAMPHLETS, DEMONSTRATIONS, OUR RECENTLY REDESIGNED QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER AND WEBSITE, A FACEBOOK PAGE, TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS.
