GROSSE ILE AIRPORT NATURE PRESERVE - IN 1969, THE GROSSE ILE NAVAL AIR STATION WAS CLOSED. FOR THE 50 YEARS THAT IT OPERATED, THE NAVY USED AN AREA NEXT TO THE AIRPORT AS A DUMP. THAT AREA IS NOW KNOWN AS THE GROSSE ILE AIRPORT NATURE PRESERVE. WHILE THE EPA CONFIRMED THE AREA WAS NOT CONTAMINATED, THE AREA IS LITTERED WITH MACHINERY, TIRES, ENGINES AND WASTE FROM THE NAVAL AIR BASE. CONSERVANCY VOLUNTEERS CLEANED UP THE WETLANDS AND FOREST AREAS, REESTABLISHED THE TRAIL SYSTEM, PROTECTED TREES FROM BEAVER DAMAGE, INSTALLED EDUCATIONAL SIGNS AND REFURBISHED AN OBSERVATION PLATFORM. THE CONSERVANCY WORKED WITH THE AIRPORT COMMISSION AND IN 2023 THE ANA OPENED TO THE PUBLIC FROM DAWN TO DUSK EVERY DAY.
