TRAIL WORK AND PLANNING - THE ASSOCIATION CONTINUED TO PLAN THE ROUTE AND BUILD AND MAINTAIN THE NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL IN 2021, BUILDING 45 MILES OF NEW TRAIL, 46 BRIDGES AND 6,000 FT OF BOARDWALK, REFRESHING SIGNAGE ON MORE THAN 379 MILES, AND MAINTAINING ANOTHER 4,093 MILES OF EXISTING TRAIL TO MAKE IT SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC. THE ASSOCIATION ALSO HAS A ROLE IN SECURING ACCESS FOR THE TRAIL AND PROTECTING THE CORRIDOR. IN 2021, THEY SECURED 16 NEW PERMANENT TRAIL ACCESS EASEMENTS AND WORKED WITH MORE THAN 100 PRIVATE LANDOWNERS.
NETWORKING AND VOLUNTEER SUPPORT - THE ASSOCIATION MANAGES A VAST NETWORK OF VOLUNTEERS, SUPPORTING 29 CHAPTERS AND A DOZEN AFFILIATE PARTNERS, ALL SUPPORTING THE NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL. IN 2021, 542 VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTED 54,236 VOLUNTEER HOURS SUPPORTING THE MISSION. THE ASSOCIATION WORKED WITH 22 YOUTH PROGRAMS AND CORP CREWS TO ASSIST THE EFFORTS.
PUBLIC SERVICE, EDUCATION, AND CARTOGRAPHY - THE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES INFORMATION AND RESOURCES TO THE PUBLIC TO ENCOURAGE THE USE OF THE NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL. NCTA MAKES THE TRAIL ACCESSIBLE TO ALL PEOPLE BY PROVIDING FREE DOWNLOADABLE MAPS AND DATA. 200,000 PEOPLE CAME TO NCTA FOR MAPS IN 2021. 4,344 HIKERS PARTICIPATED IN 362 HIKES WITH NCTA HIKE LEADERS AND 5,381 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE HIKE 100 CHALLENGE. NCTA FUNDED SEVERAL GRANTS TO SUPPORT MORE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES GETTING EXPERIENCES ON THE TRAIL THROUGH THE NEW JEDI GRANT PROGRAM.
