FUNDRAISER/EXHIBIT/GALLERY: IN APRIL OF 2021 WE HAD OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL STEAMROLLER PRINT FESTIVAL TO DATE, WITH APPROXIMATELY 5,000 ATTENDEES THROUGHOUT THE DAY. WE GAVE A PLATFORM TO OVER 200 LOCAL ARTISTS AND STUDENTS THROUGH THIS FESTIVAL AND PARTNERED WITH SEVERAL LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR FOOD, DRINK, AND ENTERTAINMENT. IN OUR GALLERIES, WE HOSTED THE BIG INK TRAVELING COLLECTION AS A PART OF OUR STEAMROLLER FESTIVAL. ARTSPACE ALSO HAD SEVERAL FREE TO THE PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE GALLERY AT ARTSAPCE BOASTS OVER 6,000 SQUARE FEET TO DISPLAY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS. WE INVITED LOCAL ARTIST MARCIA ERMEY IN JANUARY. OUR ANNUAL MENTORSHIP STUDENT EXHIBITION IN MAY HIGHLIGHTED THE WORK OUR MENTORSHIP STUDENTS HAD CREATED AT ARTSPACE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IN JUNE WE HOSTED LAWRENCE NAFF IN OUR PRESS GALLERY AND PAUL MEDINA IN OUR MAIN GALLERY. IN AUGUST, WE HOSTED THE OSAE STUDENT EXHIBITION IN OUR PRESS GALLERY AND THE CURATED THE OVAC 365 EXHIBITION IN OUR MAIN GALLERY. IN SEPTEMBER WE INVITED MELISSA JACOBS TO OUR PRESS GALLERY AND INTERNATIONAL ARTIST JOSETTE SIMONE TO OUR MAIN GALLERY IN OCTOBER. WE ALSO HAD OUR ANNUAL ARTSPACE MEMBERS EXHIBITION IN DECEMBER TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORK THAT OUR STUDIO ARTISTS HAVE CREATED IN THE SPACE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
PREFACE: THROUGHOUT 2021, ARTSPACE WAS COMMITTED TO REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY IN NEW WAYS, AS WELL AS WORKING INTERNALLY TO PROVIDE A BETTER PHYSICAL SPACE FOR MAKERS AND STUDENTS. WE CONTINUED TO WORK TOWARDS THE GOALS SET IN OUR MIND MAP, WHICH INCLUDED LAUNCHING A 3-YEAR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN FOR OUR FREE PROGRAMMING AND OPERATION COSTS. WE ARE STILL ADDING PROGRAMMING BACK FROM THE HUGE IMPACT COVID HAD ON US, BUT WE ARE DETERMINED TO INSTIGATE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES SUCH AS CREATIVE OUTDOOR MARKETS TO HELP FILL THE VOID IN OUR COMMUNITIES WHILE REMAINING SAFE. 1. THE PRESS: OUR PRESS IS A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PRINTMAKING STUDIO THAT PROVIDES THE COMMUNITY ACCESS TO 5 INTAGLIO PRESSES, 1 LITHOGRAPHY PRESS AND 30 STONES, 2 LETTERPRESSES, 3 PROOFING PRESSES, 1 BOOK PRESS, OVER 200 CASES OF TYPE, LINE-O-SCRIBE, FOILER, LIGHT TABLE, DRYING RACKS, FLAT FILES, A NUARC EXPOSURE UNIT, DARKROOM, AND WASHOUT BOOTH. WE ALSO ACQUIRED 2 T-SHIRT FLASH DRYERS AND A T-SHIRT PRESS FOR OUR MENTORSHIP STUDENTS. WE ALSO HAD A LONG ARM QUILTING MACHINE DONATED TO US FOR THE UPSTAIRS MEMBERS' STUDIO SPACE. OUR AIR'S ALSO WORK CLOSELY WITH OUR MENTORSHIP STUDENTS AND UTILIZE THE SPACE DAILY. WE ALSO HAD SEVERAL INTERNS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, LEARNING THE BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL SIDES IN CREATIVE FIELDS. ONE NEW ASPECT OF THE PRESS PROGRAMMING IS THE CREATIVE OUTDOOR MARKETS. WE HOSTED 4 MARKETS, WHEREIN LOCAL ARTISTS AND CREATORS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELL THEIR WORK IN THE SPRAWLING OUTDOOR AREA AND BEAUTIFUL ARTSPACE SCULPTURE GARDEN. ALL VENDORS KEPT 100% OF THEIR SALES AND PAID A SMALL FEE TO HELP COVER THE COSTS OF THE PROGRAM. 2. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM: THE PRINT STUDIO HOSTS OUR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH IMPACTS OVER 130 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EVERY YEAR. WE ADDED ONE SCHOOL TO THE PROGRAM, MOUNT SAINT MARY, AND HOPE TO CONTINUE THE GROWTH. THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM EXISTS TO TRANSFORM STUDENTS' LIVES THROUGH ART AND TO PREPARE THEM FOR A DYNAMIC ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL FUTURE. EACH MONTH OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, STUDENTS SPEND ONE FULL DAY IN GROUPS OF 12 STUDENTS A MONTH WORKING IN OUR INCUBATOR WITH PROFESSIONAL CREATIVES FROM THE COMMUNITY AND VISITING ARTISTS FROM OUR RESIDENCY PROGRAM. MANY OF THESE STUDENTS STAY IN THE PROGRAM FOR THREE YEARS AND LEARN PRINTMAKING, SCREEN-PRINTING, AND STUDIO PRACTICES THAT CANNOT BE RECEIVED IN TRADITIONAL EDUCATION. OUR INCUBATOR INSPIRES CURIOSITY, CREATIVITY, EXPERIMENTATION, INNOVATION, COLLABORATION, AND DIALOGUE WITH THE ART COMMUNITY UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE CREATIVE AND EDUCATION DIRECTORS. WE ALSO HAVE A SUMMER ART PROGRAM, WHICH WAS HOSTED BY NICOLE EMMONS. STUDENTS RECEIVED THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT STOP-MOTION ANIMATION AND COLLABORATED ON A SHORT FILM, WHICH WAS SUBMITTED TO THE DEADCENTER FILM FESTIVAL. 3. AIR: THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM USUALLY PROVIDES FOUR LOCAL AND TWO TO FOUR NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL VISITING ARTISTS PER YEAR. THE AIR PROGRAM ALLOWS ARTSPACE TO INJECT NEW VOICES INTO THE COMMUNITY, WHERE DIALOGUE AND EXCHANGE OF IDEAS RESULT IN A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR OUR MENTORSHIP STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY. IN 2021, WE HAD ONE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (AIR), TYLER KRASOWSKI. FROM MONTANA. TYPICALLY, WE HAVE AT LEAST 4 AIRS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, BUT FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY WE CUT BACK ON THE NUMBER OF ARTISTS WE HOSTED. IN 2023, WE HOPE TO HAVE THIS PROGRAM BACK TO FULL CAPACITY. 4. COMMUNITY SPIRITS: COMMUNITY SPIRITS IS OUR FREE THURSDAY NIGHT PROGRAMMING AND IS GENERALLY RELATED TO ALL EXHIBITS. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES LECTURES, SHORT FILM SERIES, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, LIVE MUSIC, PODCASTS AND INTERVIEWS, WORKSHOPS, CLASSES, AND MAKE & TAKE SESSIONS IN THE PRINT STUDIOS. THIS IS ALL TO INTRODUCE THE COMMUNITY TO CULTURE, ART, AND MEANINGFUL DISCUSSIONS. IN 2021, WE FOCUSED ON OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND HOSTED OUTDOOR JAZZ CONCERTS, AS WELL AS THE TASTE OF ART (TOA). FOR TOA, WE INVITED ITALIAN CHEF ROSANNA IODICE TO COOK A 9-COURSE AUTHENTIC ITALIAN MEAL FOR TICKETED GUESTS. THE PROCEEDS FROM TICKET SALES ALLOWED US SOME SUPPORT FOR OUR FREE PROGRAMMING. 5. THE GALLERIES: THE ARTSPACE MAIN GALLERY HAS OVER 6,000 SQUARE FEET TO DISPLAY VARIOUS ARTISTS LOCALLY AND FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THE GALLERY IS A SPACE FOR BOTH TWO- AND THREE- DIMENSIONAL WORKS. IN 2020, OUR EXHIBITS BEGAN WITH INSTALLATION ARTIST WHITNEY FORSYTH FROM TULSA, WE ALSO INSTALLED AN EXHIBITION IN MARCH WITH CHRIS CHANDLER FROM PORTLAND. WE HAD TO CLOSE THE GALLERY RIGHT AFTER THE OPENING DUE TO COVID-19. BEFORE CLOSING THE PRESS GALLERY WELCOMED SUDANESE ARTIST HUDA HASHIM FOR AN EXHIBITION IN JANUARY AND ARI BRIELLE FROM TEXAS, IN FEBRUARY. LASTLY, ARTSPACE RECOGNIZED THE PASSING OF PROMINENT ARTIST MICHI SUSAN BY INTRODUCING A COMMUNITY-WIDE PROJECT TO HONOR HER LIFE AND WORK. ART IS A HEALING PROCESS, SO COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM ACROSS THE CITY WORKED TOGETHER TO CREATE 1,000 PAPER CRANES TO EXHIBIT IN OUR GALLERY IN THE LATE PART OF THE YEAR. 6. POSTCARD PERSPECTIVES: OUR ANNUAL POSTCARD PERSPECTIVES EXHIBITION RAN FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. THIS YEARLY PROJECT IS AN INTERNATIONAL MAIL ART EXHIBITION WITH OVER 200 ARTISTS FROM 22 COUNTRIES AND 13 STATES, WITH OVER 600 POSTCARDS SENT TO US THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. AFTER THE EXHIBITION, WE SEND THE UNSOLD POSTCARDS TO PARTICIPATING ARTISTS SO THEY CAN HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL PEN PAL. WE HOPE TO CONTINUE TO IMPACT GLOBAL CREATIVE COMMUNICATION AND DIALOGUE WITH THIS PROGRAM. THE PROCEEDS SUPPORT OUR FREE PROGRAMMING.
THE HIVE: THE HIVE IS OUR RETAIL, MUSEUM STYLE "BOUTIQUE GIFT SHOP" FILLED WITH UNIQUE ARTFUL OBJECTS BY LOCAL CREATORS. WE PROVIDE ROUGHLY 50 ARTISTS AT A TIME A PLATFORM TO SELL THEIR WORK. THE HIVE IS ANOTHER WAY ARTSPACE FOLLOWS ITS MISSION BY SPOTLIGHTING LOCAL ARTISANS AND SHARING THEIR WORK WITH THE PUBLIC. ALTHOUGH THE SHOP WAS CLOSED FOR A LARGE PORTION OF THE YEAR DUE TO COVID, WE HIRED A NEW EMPLOYEE TO MANAGE THE GIFT SHOP AND WE HAD A SUCCESSFUL GRAND REOPENING OF THE HIVE IN DECEMBER 2021.
