COUNTRYSIDE PARK AND FARM INITIATIVES: COUNTRYSIDE IS A NONPROFIT, CREATED IN 1999 TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK TO HELP FIND SOLUTIONS TO THE DISAPPEARING RURAL LANDSCAPE IN THE PARK. SINCE THEN, OVER A DOZEN HISTORIC FARMSTEADS AND NEARLY 300 ACRES WERE REHABILITATED IN CVNP. OUR FARM PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE NATIONAL PARK'S RURAL LANDSCAPE AND FARM LEASE PROGRAM, AND IN 2018 WE LAUNCHED OUR NEW FARMER ACADEMY, BUILDING CAREER PATHWAYS FOR ASPIRING FARMERS THROUGH PAID INTERNSHIPS. TO DATE WE HAVE HAD 14 INTERNS IN THE PROGRAM AND WORKED WITH 19 MENTOR FARMS ACROSS NORTHEAST OHIO TO PROVIDE VALUABLE CLASSROOM AND HANDS-ON LEARNING FOR THE STUDENTS. WE CONTINUE TO GROW AND EXPAND THE REVITALIZATION OF THE PARKS RURAL LANDSCAPE AND GROW THESE RESOURCES FOR A BROADER COMMUNITY USE IN THE FUTURE.
COUNTRYSIDE FARMERS MARKETS AND COMMUNITY FOOD ACCESS: IN 2004 WE STARTED FARMERS' MARKETS TO CONNECT CONSUMERS TO LOCAL, FRESH FOOD. COUNTRYSIDE FARMERS' MARKETS OPERATE YEAR-ROUND AND SERVE DOZENS OF FARM AND FOOD BUSINESSES, HELPING TO SUPPORT THEIR WORK AND ENSURE LOCAL CUSTOMERS HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR PRODUCTS. THE MARKETS ENGAGE OVER 35,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR AND SUPPORT THE LOCAL ECONOMY. THE MARKETS LED TO OUR FOOD ACCESS PROGRAMMING IN 2009. WE NOW SERVE 12 MARKETS IN 4 COUNTIES WITH NUTRITION INCENTIVE PROGRAMS AND FACILITATE SNAP AND WIC USE THROUGHOUT OUR NETWORK REACHING OVER 3,050 LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN 2021 WHO WERE ABLE TO PURCHASE OVER 245,500 IN HEALTHY, FRESH, LOCAL FOOD. OUR COMMUNITY FOOD ACCESS PROGRAMS SERVE SUMMIT, STARK, MEDINA AND PORTAGE COUNTIES AT 12 MARKETS WHERE WE FACILITATE SNAP/EBT AND NUTRITION INCENTIVE PROGRAMS.
