PRODUCTION OF QUALITY, INTIMATE PERFORMANCES IN WHICH ARTISTS/AUDIENCE INTERACTION IS PARAMOUNT.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN SEASON 13, THE PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE ("PPH") PIVOTED TO A 2020-2021 SEASON OF RESPONSIVE PROGRAMMING TO SAFELY MEET PHYSICAL AND COMMUNITY CHALLENGES: KEEPING ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES SAFE WHILE CONTINUING TO ELEVATE NECESSARY VOICES AND STORIES. AS PART OF OUR INVESTMENT IN LOCAL THEATRE ARTISTS, WE PRESENTED NEW FILMED WORKS BY LONGTIME PPH COLLABORATORS AND COMMISSIONED FOUR MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTISTS TO CREATE NEW WORKS THAT DIRECTLY ENGAGE WITH THE CURRENT SOCIO-POLITICAL MOMENT. IN MARCH 2021 WE PRODUCED A THREE-WEEK RUN OF "TRIGGERED LIFE: A REQUIEM OF HEALING," A LIVE-STREAMED PERFORMANCE AND TALKBACK EXPLORING BLACK MASCULINITY AND MENTAL HEALTH. IN ADDITION TO ONLINE PERFORMANCES, PPH PRODUCED HALLOWED GROUND PRESENTS, A SERIES OF ARTIST-LED, SOCIALLY-DISTANCED, DRIVE-IN PERFORMANCES AND PLAYPHONE, AN ONGOING TELEPHONE-BASED STORY-SHARING INITIATIVE.
DUE TO THE STRESS AND COMPLICATIONS OF THE PANDEMIC, SCHOOLS WERE HESITANT TO ENROLL IN OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN 2020-2021. IN RESPONSE, WE OPENED PROGRAMS UP TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND MODIFIED PROGRAMS TO BE DELIVERED REMOTELY USING SYNCHRONOUS (EVERYONE TOGETHER IN REAL TIME OVER VIDEO CONFERENCE) AND ASYNCHRONOUS (INDIVIDUALS ON THEIR OWN OR WITH PRE-RECORDED VIDEO) LEARNING. WHILE THE FALL FESTIVAL OF SHAKESPEARE GROUP WAS SMALL (20 STUDENTS), THE WORK WAS ESPECIALLY IMPACTFUL. STUDENTS SHARED THAT THE PROJECT PROVIDED A UNIQUE SPACE FOR THEM TO BE SEEN, HEARD AND ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS (A WELCOME COUNTERPOINT TO ONLINE SCHOOL WHERE MOST STUDENTS OPTED TO BE MUTED AND UNSEEN). IN SUMMER 2021 WE PROVIDED A SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR 335 PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS. STUDENTS GAINED SKILLS IN ACTING, MOVEMENT, VOICE, AND DESIGN, AND HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE INDIVIDUAL INTERESTS (E.G. COSTUMES, WRITING) WHILE SHARING THEIR UNIQUE STORIES AND VOICES.
IN SEASON 13 WE OPENED OUR COMMUNITY SPACE FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVES INCLUDING RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES, COVID-19 VACCINATION CLINICS, AND SELF-CARE DAYS FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR.
