CAROLINA YOUTH ACTION PROJECT IS A GRASSROOTS NONPROFIT THAT USES MUSIC AS A VEHICLE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AND BUILDS POWER AMONG GIRLS AND TRANSGENDER YOUTH IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA. WE DEVELOP FEMINIST AND ANTI-RACIST YOUTH LEADERS THROUGH CULTURAL ORGANIZING PRACTICES THAT BLEND MUSIC EDUCATION, POLITICAL EDUCATION, AND DIY MEDIA MAKING.

YOUTH LEADER INSTITUTE (YLI): THE YOUTH LEADER INSTITUTE AIMS TO EQUIP GIRLS, TRANS YOUTH AND GENDER NONCONFORMING YOUTH AGES 14-18 WITH THE SKILLS, SUPPORT AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS NECESSARY TO LEAD A MOVEMENT FOR RADICAL AND LASTING CHANGE IN SOUTH CAROLINA. YLI SERVES AS AN ORGANIZING CRASH COURSE, EQUIPPING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH THE TOOLS TO EFFECTIVELY BUILD AND SUSTAIN A BASE OF FOLKS WHO SUPPORT AND ARE INVESTED IN OUR CAMPAIGN WORK. THE 2022 INSTITUTE INCLUDED 8 STUDENT LEADERS AND CULMINATED WITH THE CONTINUING OF OUR TWO YOUTH-LED CAMPAIGNS: SAFER SCHOOLS WITHOUT SROS & SEX EDUCATION BEYOND ABSTINENCE. ALSO IN 2022, A CAMPAIGN TOWN HALL WAS HELD WITH 5 FORMER STUDENT LEADERS TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK ABOUT THEIR PAST EXPERIENCES AND THEIR HOPES AND SUGGESTIONS TO HELP SHAPE THE DIRECTION OF FUTURE CAMPAIGN WORK.
JESSAMINE ZINE: DURING 2022, CAROLINA YOUTH ACTION PROJECT INTRODUCED A NEW "ZINEX AND YOUTH INITIATIVE CALLED "JESSAMINE." NAMED AFTER THE NATIVE FLOWER THAT VINES AND BLOOMS THROUGHOUT SOUTH CAROLINA, "JESSAMINE" INTENDS TO INTERCONNECT GIRLS, TRANS YOUTH, AND GENDER NONCONFORMING YOUTH IN SOUTH CAROLINA BY CREATING A DISBURSABLE PROJECT FOR CREATIVE YOUTHS TO NOT ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO, BUT ALSO OWN A COPY OF THEIR OWN WORK. THIS ZINE IS A DIGITAL AMALGAMATION OF ART, POETRY, ESSAYS, STORIES, PUZZLES, PLAYLISTS, COLLAGE, AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN THINK OF TO REPRESENT THE THEME AND THE VOICES OF YOUNG PEOPLE. A THEME IS SELECTED FOR EACH ISSUE, AND FOR 2022, THE INAUGURAL THEME WAS "POWER." A TOTAL OF 19 SUBMISSIONS WERE RECEIVED AND 5 ARTIST INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED AS PART OF THE PROJECT DURING 2022.
YOUTH ACTION ALLIANCE (YAA): THE YOUTH ACTION ALLIANCE IS A POLITICAL EDUCATION INTENSIVE PROGRAM FOR GIRLS, TRANS YOUTH AND GENDER NONCONFORMING YOUTH. YOUTH LEADERS LEARN ABOUT ISSUES RELATED TO TRANSFORMATIVE JUSTICE AND REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE, DEVELOP COMMUNITY BASED PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH PROJECTS, AND ARE TRAINED UP TO SERVE AS PEER EDUCATORS. DURING 2022, THE YAA INITIATIVE WAS PUT ON PAUSE AS A NEW CURRICULUM WAS BEING DEVELOPED BY STAFF.
