BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION PROGRAM: THE MISSOULA ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP'S (MEP) BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION PROGRAM SUPPORTS MISSOULA'S EXISTING BUSINESSES IN SUCCESSFULLY ADDING JOBS THAT PAY ABOVE THE CURRENT MEDIAN WAGE. MEP MET WITH 47 AREA BUSINESSES TO IDENTIFY WAYS TO SUPPORT THEIR GROWTH. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MISSOULA COUNTY, MEP ADMINISTERED THE BIG SKY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TRUST FUND JOB CREATION GRANT PROGRAM TO ASSIST COMPANIES WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH WAGE JOBS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, MEP SECURED $506,000 IN GRANTS TO SUPPORT 100 JOBS CREATED AT FIVE MISSOULA COMPANIES AND $155,650 IN PLANNING GRANTS TO SUPPORT SIX LOCAL PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS.
BUSINESS ATTRACTION PROGRAM: MEP WORKS WITH KEY STRATEGIC PARTNERS TO ATTRACT NEW BUSINESSES TO MISSOULA. BUSINESS ATTRACTION SUCCESSES BENEFIT NOT ONLY THE EMPLOYEES WHO SECURE HIGH-WAGE JOBS, BUT ALL OF MISSOULA. HIGHER WAGES FOR MISSOULA'S WORKFORCE MEAN MORE EXPENDABLE INCOME AND AN INCREASE IN CAPITAL SPENDING AT MISSOULA BUSINESSES. MEP RESPONDED TO MORE THAN 7 INITIAL INQUIRIES FROM BUSINESSES CONSIDERING RELOCATION AND MEP CONTINUES TO WORK WITH SEVERAL BUSINESSES WITH CONTINUED INTEREST.
BIOSCIENCE CLUSTER TALENT DEVELOPMENT: MEP LEADS THE MONTANA BIOSCIENCE CLUSTER INITIATIVE TALENT DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS. THE PROGRAM IS COMPRISED OF STAKEHOLDERS FROM THE PRIVATE SECTOR, UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA, MISSOULA ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP, TRADE ASSOCIATIONS, AND OTHERS TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SUPPORT, TRAINING, AND MENTORING TO NEW AND ESTABLISHED BIOSCIENCE BUSINESSES, ENTREPRENEURS, AND STUDENTS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, THE CLUSTER INITIATIVE WAS AWARDED AN ADDITIONAL YEAR OF FUNDING FROM THE SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION. MEP COMMISSIONED AND HELPED CONDUCT A WORKFORCE STUDY FOR MISSOULA COUNTY, WHICH PROVIDED DETAILED INFORMATION ON KEY TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES RELATED TO WORKFORCE AND ITS OVERALL IMPACT ON OUR ECONOMY.
REAL ESTATE AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT: AS A STRATEGIC INITIATIVE, MISSOULA ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP WORKS TO MAXIMIZE THE POTENTIAL OF MISSOULA'S COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE ASSETS AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY ENGAGING DIFFERENT SECTORS, STAKEHOLDERS, AND THE PUBLIC TO LEVERAGE COLLECTIVE ASSETS AND ALIGN COLLECTIVE DECISIONS COVID-19 RESPONSE: MEP CONTINUED TO LEAD THE MISSOULA COUNTY ECONOMIC RECOVERY TASK FORCE WHICH PULLED TOGETHER MEMBERS FROM PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL SECTORS TO QUICKLY RESPOND TO THE ECONOMIC CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. BIG SKY BUSINESS INSIGHT SUMMIT (BIG SKY BIS): IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, MEP HOSTED THE FIRST ANNUAL BIG SKY BIS, A MULTI-DAY CONFERENCE THAT CONVENES CROSS-SECTOR LEADERS TO DEFINE BIG PROBLEMS, IDENTIFY MONTANA'S STRENGTHS TO ADDRESS THEM, AND PROVIDE INSIGHTS ON HOW SOLUTIONS CAN GROW HIGHER PAYING JOBS, STRENGTHEN OUR STATEWIDE ECONOMY, AND IMPROVE OUR OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE. HELD VIRTUALLY, THIS EVENT LOOKED AT THE CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY COVID-19 AND MONTANA'S OPPORTUNITIES TO SOLVE THEM AND GROW STRONGER IN THE PROCESS AND FEATURED DISTINGUISHED LEADERS IN THE FIELDS OF BIOSCIENCE, HEALTH, AND TECHNOLOGY. COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY: MEP CONVENED A STEERING COMMITTEE AND MULTIPLE FOCUS GROUPS TO DEVELOP A STRATEGIC DOCUMENT THAT WILL GUIDE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN MISSOULA COUNTY OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. A COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY (CEDS) IS A MEASURABLE AND ACTIONABLE PLAN DEVELOPED BY A DIVERSE WORKGROUP OF LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES FROM PRIVATE, PUBLIC, AND NONPROFIT SECTORS TO IDENTIFY REGIONAL PRIORITIES FOR ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT. THIS PROCESS INVOLVED A HIGH LEVEL OF PLANNING AROUND STEERING COMMITTEE AND FOCUS GROUP MEETINGS TO MAXIMIZE PARTICIPANT TIME AND ENGAGEMENT.
