CONTINUED TO ASSIST IN THE DETAINEE VISITATION PROJECT AT WILLACY DETENTION CENTER IN RAYMONDVILLE, TEXAS. VOLUNTEERS VISITED THE DETAINEES IN THE CENTER AND WERE A LISTENING BOARD AND PROVIDED A COMPASSIONATE FACE FOR THE DETAINEES WHO REQUESTED TO HAVE A VISITOR. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SAN JUAN SCHOOL DISTRICT, PHARR PUBLIC LIBRARY, HOME DEPOT, SOUTHWEST TEXAS LITERACY COALITION AND LUTHERAN CHURCHES, BOOKS WERE PRESENTED FOR THE BORDER LITERACY PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS TO BOTH PARENTS AND CHILDREN, ASSISTING THE CHILDREN IN DEVELOPING THE IMPORTANT SKILL OF READING TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND ACHIEVE THEIR FUTURE GOALS. THE PARENTS RECEIVED AN ORIENTATION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF READING, TIPS ON HOW TO READ TO THEIR CHILDREN AND MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AMEXTRA MEXICO, AN IMMIGRATION FORUM WAS HELD IN MEXICO CITY BRINGING TOGETHER ECUMENICAL PARTNERS TO SHARE WAYS OF WORKING TOGETHER ACROSS THE BORDER IN ADDRESSING ISSUES OF IMMIGRATION. LFMII ATTENDED TRAINING IN FUNDRAISING, WORKING WITH A NON PROFIT BOARD, AND DESIGNING A WEB PAGE.
