MANAGE THE FERAL CAT POPULATION IN PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

FEED AND CLEAN TEAM - 320 COMMUNITY CATS IN 34 COLONIES ARE FED AND WATERED EVERY NIGHT BETWEEN 3 AND 5 AM. THE TEAM LEADER THEN CIRCLES BACK AND PICKS UP ANY REMAINING FOOD AND REPLENISHES THE WATER. THE CATS GATHER FOR FEEDING WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO BE MONITORED FOR ANY MEDICAL CONDITIONS REQUIRING TREATMENT. THESE CATS ARE TRAPPED AND TREATED BY OUR SPECIALTY VETERINARIAN. OUR WORK IS INVISIBLE DUE TO OUR BEFORE DAWN SCHEDULE.

CAT POPULATION CONTROL - FERTILE CATS ARE IDENTIFIED WHEN KITTENS ARE OBSERVED OR NEW CATS RECOGNIZED WHEN THEY APPEAR AT THE FEEDING STATIONS. THESE CATS ARE TRAPPED, VACCINATED, STERILIZED AND RETURNED. THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROGRAM IS BASED ON ALL CATS BEING SPAYED AND NEUTERED SO THERE IS NO POPULATION GROWTH AND THAT POPULATION DECREASES THROUGH NATURAL ATTRITION AND OLD AGE. OUR GOAL IS TO EVENTUALLY HAVE NO FREE ROAMING CATS. THE EVIDENCE OF THE PROGRAM'S HUMANE SUCCESS IS THAT THE POPULATION IS NOW 60% LOWER THAN WHEN WE STARTED 12 YEARS AGO.

FIELD DIRECTOR'S WORK - THE FIELD DIRECTOR COORDINATES TRAPPING, TRANSPORTING CATS, WORKS WITH COLONY CARETAKERS, RESPONDS TO ALL CITIZEN CALLS, DOMESTICATES TRAPPED KITTENS, WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE FEEDING TEAM LEADER, ORDERS AND DELIVERS FOOD.
