THE MISSION OF THE ACCE INSTITUTE IS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF CALIFORNIA'S TRADITIONALLY UNDERSERVED RESIDENTS, INCLUDING COMMUNITIES OF COLOR, LOW-INCOME AND WORKING FAMILIES, AND THE UNDOCUMENTED POPULATION, BY CARRYING OUT WORK THAT FOSTERS DEEP, INDIGENOUS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, POLICY CREATION, ROBUST CIVIC PARTICIPATION, AND BROAD COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT.

OVER THE COURSE OF 2021, ACCE HELD 5 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PROGRAMS, WITH A TOTAL OF 200 ACCE VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATING IN THEM. THOSE LEADERS WENT ON TO WORK ON ISSUE CAMPAIGNS IN THE AREAS OF HOUSING, EDUCATION, AND BUDGET ADVOCACY. MOST NOTABLY, THEY LED IN THE FIGHT TO DECREASE FUNDING GOING TO POLICING AND INCARCERATION AND INCREASING FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY NEEDS SUCH AS HOUSING, HEALTH CARE, AND PUBLIC EDUCATION. ONE IMPORTANT ROLE ACCE PLAYS IS STRENGTHENING OUR PARTICIPATORY DEMOCRACY BY CONNECTING IMPACTED PEOPLE WITH THEIR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. THESE MEETINGS ARE INTENDED TO ALLOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND THEIR SOLUTIONS WITH DECISION MAKERS. TO THAT END, IN 2021 ACCE FACILITATED OVER 50 MEETINGS WITH LEGISLATIVE OFFICES AND THEIR CONSTITUENTS, INCLUDING 24 MEETINGS WITH THE LEGISLATORS THEMSELVES.
