DISASTER RISK REDUCTION: THE HAITI DISASTER RELIEF AND RECOVERY PROJECT PROVIDED RELIEF AND RECOVERY ACTIVITIES TO OLDER PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE EARTHQUAKE OF AUGUST 14, 2021 IN THE DEPARTMENTS OF GRANDANSE, SUD AND NIPPES. HELPAGE PROVIDED HYGIENE KITS, FOOD VOUCHERS, AND CASH TRANSFERS TO HELP STABILIZE THE COMMUNITIES. IN ADDITION, OLDER PEOPLE RECEIVED GOATS TO CARE FOR, WHICH PRODUCE FOOD AND INCOME, AS WELL AS SEEDS TO RESTORE GARDENS AND CROPS DAMAGED BY THE EARTHQUAKE. THEY WERE ALSO PROVIDED WITH ASSISTANCE TO PLANT BEANS, SPINACH, SWEET POTATOES, AND VEGETABLES WITH HIGH NUTRITIONAL VALUE. A TOTAL OF 4,747 INDIVIDUALS WERE SERVED.
POLICY AND EDUCATION: HELPAGE USA PROMOTES POLICIES AND BUILDS AWARENESS AMONG KEY US AUDIENCES ABOUT THE IMPACT OF GLOBAL AGING AND HOW OLDER PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY A LACK OF INCOME, AGE-APPROPRIATE HEALTH CARE, VULNERABILITY TO VIOLENCE AND ABUSE AND THE NEED TO ENSURE THAT OLDER PEOPLE HAVE A VOICE IN DEBATES ABOUT POLICIES THAT IMPACT THEM.
