FOTAS' MISSION IS TO SUPPORT THE AIKEN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER BY PROMOTING ANIMAL WELFARE RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP AND THE ELIMINATION OF EUTHANASIA OF ALL ADOPTABLE ANIMALS.

BUILDING ADDITION--FOTAS AND THE COUNTY SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETED THE PRIMARY LEARNING ADOPTION WELLNESS AND SOCIALIZATION PAWS CENTER TO OPEN IN EARLY 2023. THE CENTER FEATURES A CAT ROOM AND CATIO AS WELL AS MEET AND GREET ROOMS WHERE POTENTIAL ADOPTERS CAN GET TO KNOW A NEW DOG AWAY FROM THE FRENZIED ENVIRONMENT OF THE KENNELS AND THE DISTRACTIONS OF OUTSIDE PLAY YARDS. IT ALSO HAS A LARGE ROOM FOR TRAINING AND SOCIALIZING SHELTER DOGS. THE ROOM WILL PROVIDE SPACE FOR INDOOR DOG PLAY GROUPS INTRODUCING SHELTER DOGS TO POTENTIAL ADOPTERS' EXISTING DOGS HOLDING EDUCATIONAL EVENTS AND GIVING PRESENTATIONS AND TRAINING TO STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS.
TRANSFERS--FOTAS ORGANIZES TRANSFERS TO OTHER NO-KILL SHELTERS FOR MANY DOGS AND CATS THAT CANNOT FIND HOMES IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. THE TRANSFER PROGRAM INCLUDES AN EXTENSIVE NETWORK OF VOLUNTEERS WHO FOSTER PETS UNTIL THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH OR HEALTHY ENOUGH TO TRANSFER. THIS PROGRAM IS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL INITIATIVES TO INCREASE THE LIVE RELEASE RATE AT THE SHELTER. FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS EVERY ADOPTABLE ANIMAL AT THE SHELTER HAS BEEN SAVED--4,043 IN 2022 ALONE.
SHELTER & COMMUNITY NEEDS--FOTAS SUPPLEMENTS THE COUNTY SHELTER'S BUDGET BY FUNDING 1 HEARTWORM MEDICINE TO SAVE DOGS WHO WERE EUTHANIZED IN THE PAST FOR LACK OF MEDICAL CARE 2 FLEA MEDICINE TOYS LEASHES PET FOOD SUPPLEMENTS AND OTHER SUPPLIES AND 3 MEDICAL CARE FOR EXTRAORDINARILY ILL OR INJURED ANIMALS SURRENDERED TO THE SHELTER. WE ALSO FUND MEMBERSHIP IN THE HOME TO HOME PROGRAM IN AIKEN COUNTY WHICH REDUCES THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS TURNED IN TO SHELTER EACH YEAR. FOTAS CONTRACTED FOR TECHNICAL SERVICES TO UPDATE SEVERAL WEB SITES WITH PICTURES AND INFORMATION ABOUT ADOPTABLE ANIMALS AS WELL AS OTHER CURRENT PET-RELATED INFORMATION ON A DAILY BASIS. FOR THE COMMUNITY FOTAS SUPPLIES HUMANE RUNNERS DOG HOUSES AND FOOD FOR PETS BELONGING TO COUNTY CITIZENS IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE. AS NEEDED WE ALSO FUND TNR SURGERIES AT LOCAL VETERINARIAN OFFICES AND SURGERY ASSISTANCE WHEN SHELTER RESOURCES ARE NOT AVAILABLE.
