Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3
NEWARK YOGA MOVEMENT (NYM) PROVIDES YOGA CLASSES TO OVER 40 SCHOOLS IN NEWARK, NJ OVER THE LAST FOURTEEN YEARS. PRIOR TO COVID, THE ORGANIZATION RAN OVER 100 CLASSES PER WEEK IN A VARIETY OF SCHOOLS FROM PRE-K THROUGH 12TH GRADE. THIS PAST YEAR TRANSITIONED BACK TO IN-PERSON CLASSES FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS AND A COMBINATION OF IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL CLASSES FOR THE NEWARK COMMUNITY. DOSAGE (FREQUENCY OF YOGA AND TIME PER CLASS) VARIES BASED ON SCHOOL NEEDS AND AGE OF CHILDREN. ALL LEVELS ARE CHILDREN RECEIVING YOGA FROM TIER ONE AND TIER TWO (HAVING MANY BEHAVIORAL NEEDS) TO CHILDREN HAVING SPECIAL NEEDS, ATHLETES AND MORE. OUTCOMES: OVER AND OVER STUDENTS REDUCE THEIR ANXIETY AND STRESS AND LEARN HOW TO HANDLE SITUATIONS DIFFERENTLY. NOTE THAT IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT, IT IS OFTEN TWO STEPS FORWARD AND ONE STEP BACK. FOR EXAMPLE, MANY CHILDREN LIVE ON A STAGE OF CHAOS, SINGLE PARENT HOUSEHOLD, GUARDIAN OR PARENT IN JAIL, DRUGS, SHOOTINGS ETC. IT'S A LOT FOR THE CHILDREN SO IF ONE IS ANGRY, THE BEHAVIOR OFTEN SEEN AT HOME IS VIOLENT. IN SCHOOL WHERE THEY LEARN YOGA, THEY CAN SHIFT ANGER USING BREATH AND THAT TAKES TIME. OUR PROGRAM CONTINUES WITH A TOP NEWARK HIGH SCHOOL WHERE WE TEACH 1,200 STUDENTS, INCLUDING TEACHING YOGA FOR ATHLETES. IN JANUARY WE ADDED SELF-CARE SESSIONS FOR THIS SCHOOL'S STAFF. STUDENTS CANNOT BELIEVE HOW YOGA HAS HELPED THEM REDUCE ANXIETY AND FIND CALM AND A BIT OF PAUSE, EVEN THE STUDENTS AT SCHOOLS WHERE BEHAVIOR IS CHALLENGING. FURTHER WALKING THROUGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WHERE THERE WAS PREVIOUSLY POOR BEHAVIOR, HAS SHIFTED TO QUIET HALLWAYS AND GOOD STUDENT BEHAVIOR IN THE CLASSROOM.STAFF YOGA/STAFF DEVELOPMENT IN PERSON AND VIA ZOOM SESSIONS WITH SCHOOLS: EDUCATORS CONTINUE TO BE STRESSED OUT THAT THESE TWICE MONTHLY SESSIONS SERVED TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND HELP THEM SELF-REGULATE, REDUCE STRESS AND ANXIETY, AND MOVE A BIT. FURTHER, TIPS WERE PROVIDED FOR THEM TO USE WITH THEIR STUDENTS WHILE TEACHING VIRTUALLY.COMMUNITY YOGA INCLUDES ALL THE FACEBOOK LIVE AND INSTAGRAM LIVE CLASSES: SINCE THE START OF COVID THROUGH OUR FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2022-JUNE 30, 2023. THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR ANY OF THESE CLASSES, ALTHOUGH WE SOFTLY ASKED FOR DONATIONS, AND DIRECTLY RECEIVED SOME FOR THESE CLASSES. THIS ALSO INCLUDES PRE-NATAL YOGA GIVEN IN-PERSON IN THE COMMUNITY OF WHICH A PROGRAMMING FEE IS CHARGED TO THE FACILITY, AS WELL AS IN-PERSON COMMUNITY CLASSES AT NHA FACILITIES.
