PURPOSE: THIS PROJECT IS TO UPGRADE A HEAVILY USED SECTION OF THE FAIRFIELD LOOP TRAIL. THE TRAIL CONNECTS THE MAJOR GREEN SPACES FOUND WITHIN CITY LIMITS. IT IS ALMOST ALL OFF-ROAD AND IS 16 MILES LONG ENCIRCLING FAIRFIELD. IT IS A SUPERIOR TRAIL DUE TO ITS DIVERSITY, PASSING THROUGH WOODLANDS, ALONG DEVELOPED WETLANDS, THROUGH NATIVE PRAIRIE LAND, NEIGHBORHOODS OF VARYING SOCIAL STATUS, AND ALONG COMMERCIAL AREAS. THE TRAIL CONNECTS DIRECTLY WITH 5 CITY AND COUNTY PARKS, THE HISTORIC MAASDAM BARNS, AND MORE THAN 6 MILES OF OFF-ROAD TRAILS. THE EMERALD LOOP HAS 13 MILES OF WHEEL SPOKES, STREETS AND SIDEWALKS CONNECTING TO THE CITY'S CENTRAL PARK AS THE HUB. THIS PROJECT IS TO UPGRADE 5.0 MILES OF THE TRAIL. OVER THE YEARS GRASS HAS GROWN INTO THE SIDES AND WITHIN THE TRAIL. THE CITY MOWS THE SHOULDERS, SPRAYS FOR WEEDS, AND BLADES THE TRAIL, BUT IT IS TIME FOR MORE EXTENSIVE WORK.
