ARTS EDUCATION: THE WBL ACADEMY ENGAGES YOUTH IN ARTS EDUCATION COURSES LED BY LOCAL ADULT HIP-HOP ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, AND TEACHERS WHO CARE ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS PROGRAM OUTCOMES, AS THEY ARE TIED TO LIFE OUTCOMES. ACADEMY PROGRAMS CONSIST OF CLASSES IN, EMCEEING, DJING, STREET ART, SPOKEN WORD POETRY, DANCE, BEAT PRODUCTION, AND ARTS MANAGEMENT. THE DESIGN OF THE ACADEMY CURRICULUM IS HIGHLY EXPERIENTIAL AND HANDSON. BY CREATING THIS PRE-VOCATIONAL ARTS PROGRAM DEDICATED TO SKILLSET MASTERY, EMPLOYABILITY, THE PURSUIT OF A POST SECONDARY EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY, APPRENTICE STUDENTS WILL BE LIVING EXAMPLES OF SELF-MASTERY. THEY WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE RESOURCES, EXPERIENCES AND THE SUPPORT NETWORK NECESSARY TO BE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND WHAT IS POSSIBLE FOR THEIR LIVES. OUR ACADEMY PROGRAMMING RUNS ON TWO TRACKS: THE ARTS MANAGEMENT AND THE ARTIST TRACK. IN BOTH CASES, STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS DESIGNED TO EXPOSE THEM TO NEW KNOWLEDGE, TECHNIQUES, AND METHODS. STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND NETWORK. WE ALSO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO PRACTICE WHAT WE TEACH YOUNG TO ARTISTS, IN THE SUMMER, THROUGH PERFORMANCES, AND PUBLIC ART MAKING.
