Part 3 - Line 1
FAUAF IS DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING HIGHER EDUCATION IN AFGHANISTAN.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THIS FISCAL YEAR WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY WITH THE LOSS OF THE CAMPUS, THE EVACUATION AND RELOCATION OF STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF, AND FEAR REGARDING THE REMAINING STUDENTS, ALUMNI, FACULTY, AND STAFF IN AFGHANISTAN. THE LOSS OF ACCESS TO THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN KABUL, A $100 MILLION ASSET, AND THE INABILITY TO FUNCTION OPENLY REGARDING THE ONGOING CLASSES HAVE FORCED THE FOUNDATION TO FUNCTION IN A DIFFERENT MANNER. FAUAF NO LONGER RAISES FUNDS TO ADD TO THE FACILITIES IN KABUL, INCLUDING SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT, CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS ETC. FAUAF'S FOCUS IS NOW AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE PROVIDING ASSISTANCE IN THE FOLLOWING: (NOT IN ANY SPECIFIC ORDER):CONTINUED RELOCATION AND EVACUATION PROGRAMS. FAUAF WAS ABLE TO ENSURE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION UNTIL THEIR RELOCATION TO ONE OF AUAF'S UNIVERSITY PARTNER LOCATIONS. AFTER A THOROUGH FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS AND INSURANCE OF FISCAL SAFETY STANDARDS, FAUAF PROVIDED RELOCATION SUPPORT TO STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF BY PROVIDING FUNDING FOR BASIC AMENITY STIPENDS, TEMPORARY HOUSING, DATA PACKAGES AND SIM CARDS TO CONTINUE ONLINE EDUCATION, COMMERCIAL FLIGHT TICKETS, AND OTHER COSTS INCURRED DURING RELOCATION. ABOVE ALL, FAUAF'S RELOCATION SUPPORT ENABLED STUDENTS TO SAFELY CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION TEMPORARILY DISPLACED IN COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD.DUE TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES, FAUAF FUNDED MEDICAL PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WHO FOUND THEMSELVES IN DIRE TROUBLE OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY WITH NO ACCESS TO MEDICAL FACILITIES WITHOUT FUNDING. AGAIN, THIS IS THE RAPID ADAPTION TO ADHERE TO THE CHALLENGING SITUATION. PROVISION OF SUPPLIES ESSENTIAL TO CONTINUE OFFERING REMOTE CLASSES IN AFGHANISTAN. DONORS HAVE BEEN ASKED TO HELP PROVIDE DATA PACKAGES, COMPUTERS, BOOKS, ETC TO STUDENTS IN THE COUNTRY. FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO HAVE MANAGED TO RELOCATE TO ONE OF THE KEY LOCATIONS IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING AUAIS IN IRAQ, AUCA IN BISHKEK, EDUCATION CITY IN DOHA QATAR, BARD COLLEGE IN NY AND 14 OTHER COUNTRIES. UNRESTRICTED AND RESTRICTED FUNDS TO BE UTILIZED FOR PROGRAMMATIC DEVELOPMENT BY AUAF. THESE INCLUDE SUPPORT OF STM BOOTCAMPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS IN AFGHANISTAN; BRIDGE PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL, LOST DUE TO THE EDICTS TO FORBID EDUCATION. PROGRAMS TO PROMOTE GENDER PARITY BOTH WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY AS WELL AS OUTSIDE TO ASSURE THAT THE EFFORTS OF THE LAST DECADE-PLUS ARE NOT DIMINISHED.MAJOR COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGNS RELATED TO PROGRAMMATIC CONTENT, CONDUCTED BY AUAF. MESSAGING HAD TO CHANGE DUE TO THE CRISIS FOLLOWING AUGUST 2021.BOTTOM LINE, IS THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF FAUAF, THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF AFGHANISTAN REMAINS THE ONLY WORLD-CLASS INSTITUTION THAT STILL FUNCTIONS WITHIN AFGHANISTAN. AUAF CONTINUES TO BE THE ONLY NOT-FOR-PROFIT, PRIVATE, NOT-FOR-PROFIT, CO-ED INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE COUNTRY. IT IS ONLY THROUGH THE FUNDS PROVIDED BY FAUAF THAT THIS HAS BEEN ABLE TO CONTINUE TO NOT ONLY FUNCTION BUT ADAPT TO THE CRISIS SITUATION. IN ADDITION, THE SCOPE OF THE ORGANIZATION EXPANDED TO THE HUB IN DOHA, AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS IN IRAQ, BISHKEK, US AND 14 OTHER COUNTRIES. IN THE PROCESS OF ADAPTING, FAUAF MADE A MAJOR FOCUSED EFFORT TO CUT OPERATIONAL COSTS, BY DECREASING THE NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES, HIRING PART-TIME INTERNS AND CONSULTANTS AT A REDUCED COST, AND REDUCING TRAVEL AND BASIC EXPENSES.
