DANCE CANVAS' MISSION IS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES AND VENUES TO INCREASE THE AWARENESS OF PROFESSIONAL DANCE IN THE SOUTHEAST. WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION THROUGH THREE PROGRAM AREAS OF SERVICE CAREER DEVELOPMENT, YOUTH OUTREACH AND AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT.

PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE SERIES (CHOREOGRAPHER CAREER DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE): PROVIDES 10 PROFESSIONAL CHOREOGRAPHERS WITH CAREER BUILDING RESOURCES AND A VENUE FOR REHEARSALS/PERFORMANCES; WORKS WITH 50 PROFESSIONAL DANCERS TO CREATE WORLD PREMIER DANCE WORKS TO PRESENT TO OVER 1200 AUDIENCE MEMBERS (INCLUDING AT LEAST 600 YOUTH THROUGH OUR OUTREACH EFFORTS). WE PROVIDE CAREER MENTORING SERVICES TO THE CHOREOGRAPHERS. WE PROVIDE CRITICAL ANALYSIS PROJECTS TO OUR YOUTH AUDIENCES.
DANCE CANVAS YOUTH PROGRAMS: DC NEXT (A 4-WEEK PROGRAM DESIGNED TO TEACH 25-30 STUDENTS ABOUT THE PROFESSIONAL CAREER OF DANCE. THE TEENS PRODUCE THEIR OWN PRODUCTION, AND WORK WITH CHOREOGRAPHERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO SET GOALS, NEGOTIATE THEIR FUTURE CAREER PLANS, AND IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGES AND BARRIERS TO SUCCESS.); OUTREACH: (CITY OF ATLANTA CENTERS OF HOPE, AFTER SCHOOL YEAR LONG PROGRAM FOR AGES 5-12 YRS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF ATLANTA'S DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION). TOTAL OUTREACH PARTICIPANTS: 200-400 KIDS AGES 5-18 YRS. WE ALSO PROVIDE WORKSHOPS, LECTURES AND MASTER CLASSES TO ATLANTA AREA MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. (MOST OF THE 2020-21 PROGRAMS WERE OFFERED VIRTUALLY BUT STILL SERVED THE SAME COMMUNITY OF YOUTH/SCHOOLS.)
AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT/FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS: PERFORMANCES, MASTER CLASSES, OPEN REHEARSALS FOR THE COMMUNITY; ESTIMATES OF ATTENDEES REACH 2,000 ANNUALLY. DANCE CANVAS ALSO STARTED AN ONLINE BLOG SALON TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHIC PROCESS, AS WELL AS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ARTS IN THE LIVES OF YOUTH AND THE GENERAL COMMUNITY.
