ITS MISSION AND PURPOSE IS TO BE AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION WHOSE GOALS ARE TO PROVIDE FACILITIES FOR ASSOCIATION AND COMMUNICATION AMONG MOLECULAR EVOLUTIONISTS AND TO FURTHER THE GOALS OF MOLECULAR EVOLUTION, AS WELL AS ITS PRACTITIONERS AND TEACHERS. IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS, THE SOCIETY PUBLISHES TWO PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS, "MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONX AND "GENOME BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION." THE SOCIETY SPONSORS AN ANNUAL MEETING, AS WELL AS SMALLER SATELLITE MEETINGS OR WORKSHOPS ON IMPORTANT, FOCUSED, AND TIMELY TOPICS. IT ALSO CONFERS HONORS AND AWARDS TO STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS.

THE SOCIETY PUBLISHES TWO SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION (ONLINE AND PRINT, WEBSITE: MBE.OXFORDJOURNALS.ORG/) AND GENOME BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION (AN OPEN ACCESS, ONLINE-ONLY JOURNAL, WEBSITE: GBE.OXFORDJOURNALS.ORG/). OUR PUBLISHER IS OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS. FOR MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION, THE SOCIETYHAD INSTITUTIONAL, INDIVIDUAL AND OTHER SUBSCRIPTIONS. THE SOCIETY EXPENSES FOR THESE JOURNALS ARE ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY ASSOCIATED WITH EDITOR AND EDITOR OFFICE SUPPORT.


THE SOCIETY SUPPORTS A SCIENTIFIC MEETING/CONFERENCE, WHICH HAS BEEN DONE EVERY YEAR SINCE 1993. JULY 2020, THE MEETING WAS HELD VIRTUALLY. THIS INCLUDES PROVIDING (A) SEED MONEY FOR THE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, (B) TRAVEL AWARDS FOR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS, GRADUATE STUDENTS AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, AND (C) TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION SUPPORT FOR SMBE COUNCIL MEMBERS TO ATTEND THE MEETING AND PARTICIPATE IN OUR DAY-LONG COUNCIL MEETING.
